Find Ancestors

Hi All,

Have been trying to track down a burial place relating to my Greens in London.
Have a death in Brixton so contacted Norwood & Lambeth Cems and a very nice lady looked for the burial and rang me a few days later......negative.

Thinking perhaps my Green may have been buried with his wife who died in Islington, I got in touch with them to request the same.........They wanted £45.00!! to do a search, so after I picked myself off the floor I asked them why they charge so much which I think threw her a little....um agh um agh, "most cems are computerised we are not, therefore these things take time". Surley they must have some sort of system/Index that if they have the date of dearh would be quite easy to locate enabling them to say a tes or no! £45.00 flipping pounds I dont believe it!

OH phoned a Hampshire office on Monday, asking for help re. finding a grave in a known cemetery.
The lady couldn't have been more helpful and gave the grave numbers. She asked if we had an e mail address and then sent a scanned map of the cemetery, showing location of the grave.

Why can't they all offer a similar service?

Thanks so much for the offer, I have a Francis Green died November 17th 1882 in Brixton.

Caroline Green died Islington between 1861/65.

I have just been looking at Pancras & Islington Cemetery on google, it is huge!........not your usual afternoon grave hunting expedition, you would need to take a survival kit should you get lost!

omg thats shockking gateshead cematary looked one up for nothing they said i could have one search but they acctually diod 2 free as one was an adult and one was a child only 1yr old how come its alright 4 1 county to do that and another not to but i did know ware and which cemeatry and there death year they checked found me the day they were burried and the plot number for nothing

and if i wanted to see ware there buriied because its a massive place they would send a guide to shopw me i only have to give them 3 days notice

Gwyn.......my local record office here in North Wales are the same, many a day I have been there researching and they answer the telephone requests within earshot and I must say on ever occasion they are most helpful, and if too busy at that point to look up something they will do it later and ring the person back.

I phoned a local cemetery on Monday morning to find out burial details as I knew there was no headstone and theytsaid they would send our a plan of the cemetery with the section marked and advised of the plot number and said that within the next few days a member of the parks dept would go out and spray the grass with yellow paint so that I knew where to look. It did not cost me a penny other than the cost of the call. The plan arrived today. they aslo offered to send a member of staff out to meet me at the cemetry to show me where the plot was.

HI All,

Seems like its not everywhere then, it just makes my blood boil a bit, I hate to be taken for a mug! I just cant see how they can justify charging such vast amounts......apparently if I called at the cem I could look at the records for FREE!

have you tried the Streatham Cemetery? My grandmother's family lived in Southwark and they were buried there. I think it is called Streatham Park cemetery.

I sent an email to London borough of Hillingdon and they sent me a complete list of all Persons burried with the 2 names that I was looking for away back to yearly 1800s, to present day. They have also offered to help if I need to find a cetain grave so when I travel south this summer I Know I will be able to find them. brilliant.

I think I recall enquiring about Streatham and am sure it was not opened till the 1890's which would have been too late as my Green died in 1882.

I sent an email to Haringey council to ask about someone who died in 1951 and they got back to me with the grave number plus also told his wife was buried with him in 1973 more than I had saked for but very nice to know.

and a sneaky way for some councils to raise cash. I include mine in that ... think they charge about £40.

Just read the post and was gobsmacked at the prices some places charge it is ridiculas.

I went onto our city cemetary website and this is what it says...

All cremations and burials are recorded on computer and retained forever. We have over 68,500 cremations, 118,000 burials and over 70,000 graves on record.

Bereavement Services can find information on the deceased so long as we have the full name of the deceased and the actual date of death (there is no charge for this search). If the actual date of death is not known then we would require an approximate period i.e. 1890's, 1930's etc. For this search a minimum charge of £10-00 is required.

Information we can issue is as follows:

Place of death
Home address at the time of death
Age at death
Date of burial or cremation
For burial the grave number if it was a purchased or un-purchased grave, if purchased then details of whoever else is buried there
For a cremation what happened to the cremated remains i.e. removed, buried in a grave, buried in the gardens of remembrance or strewn in the woods


I have just called them asking about my husbands sister who was still born and is buried there, I have the ward/sec/grave number and asked if they would be able to put a marker in the place so we knew where she was this is going to be done next week and guess what there is no charge for that either.

Did you tr Camberwell new and old cemetries? Also Brockley and Ladywell very nearby and are searchable on line.

He is not in Brockley but I have copied Greens that are there for you. Easy to get to though. just google Brocley cemetry, find your surname and click on reference. A treasure trove.

The amount that some authorities charge is outrageous. I went to Norfolk and found the entry I wanted but the printer wasn't working so I had to ask them toe send me a copy when it was repaired. I think the charge was about £5.

I have just ordered some army records of a relative in Canada. The charge for photocopies is 39c per page. They couldn't give me a total price as they don't know how many pages there are, it could be up to a hundred, then there is the postage.
