could anyone please help. i am looking for info on my grandfather george henry petty born 1907/08 in rotherham, under surname peg bailey. mother is beatrice bailey not sure about fathers name.

I think he is on the 1911 census as George Petty,Rotherham but i don't have any credits to look.

1911 census was updated today to include yorkshire
so you can find him now .

also if you have his birth cert and it has no fathers name,that normally means the child is illegitimate.

thankyou for replies. not sure if it is him on 1911 census as no sign of beatrice in household unless she gave him to walter petty because george was illegitimate.
june that is the correct george but i am puzzled about his parents.

could you tell us the details on his birth cert please.
is he reg as petty or bailey?
then we can try to help a little more maybe?

walter petty 48 and mary ellen petty 44 were married 25 years in 1911 on census doc. they did have another child but died not sure of name.

How did you manage to find his birth cert. under Peg Bailey?

Sounds like the Pettys adopted George.

What address is on the birth cert? Have you tried looking for that in 1911?

i have birth cert. and letter from somerset house london in 1950 saying because he has always known as petty he can use the name and married in that name and all descendants could use name also . no mention of adoption.

Official adoption was only recognised in the 1920s

thankyou for replies didnt know official adoption 1920.i think beatrice had iligitimate child then gave him away to walter petty and wife, but bit of a longshot and no proof only that george petty was born in 1907 on my birth cert and george petty age 3 on 1911 census living with walter petty.

I think the adoption act was 1926.

I googled adoption act in England 1926 and it came up with
Struggle For Identity .Issues Underlying The Enactment of the 1926.

On reading the article on page 2 it mentions the childrens act in 1908 stated that people caring for children up to 7 years of age had to be registered. This was because of unscrupulous "baby farming". Women were taking on babies to be sold on and it reports children dying from starvation
Interesting reading.

I had also read about children in general in the 1900's.
Children would be insured and then left to starve so parents? could collect the insurance.
I remember seeing I was insured in 1947 for a penny a week so it was still a common practice to insure children. The deaths in babies ,young children were very high among poor people
