Find Ancestors

Some months ago I received some help from this area regarding Dominick Matthews, his wife, Mary and children., John and Mary.

I have only found Dominick in the deaths area and nowhere else.
They lived at 29 Jordan Street, Liverpool when Dominick died
in 1864. In 1871, Mary, John and Mary appeared in that year’s census, however, I think they were living at 18 Jordan Street, Liverpool. I’m not really sure that they are the right family as again, my brother did not think that John’s sister was called Mary. We know there was a sister to John but we have no way of finding out if she was Mary or another name.

I think they were all born in Ireland. My brother is of the opinion
that the children, John and Mary were born in Wales. With details I have of my grandfather John Matthews, can someone advise me how to find his birth record if he was born in Ireland. John’s birth date was 26 December 1858. I suppose it is possible that John was born in England. When I was very young, I remember being told that John didn’t know whether he was born in England or Ireland. He died before I was born.

Since Dominick died in the England, I have been able to obtain his Death Certificate. I would really like to try and get John’s Birth
Certificate. The surname of Mary, mother of John, was Duff or maybe Doff or Dobb. I have not been able to find any marriage records of Dominick and Mary.

Hi - thank you for the information you have supplied. I'm sorry, I forgot to mention my Dominick was born in 1836, (he died 1864) however, this Dominick you have supplied was born in 1855 and he may be a relation. I do not have anything to confirm that he is part of my family. It would be interesting to find if these people are related to my family, but that's a later investigation I think.
If I have John Matthews full birth date (26.12.1858) and if he was born in Ireland, how do I look up his records in Ireland? Sorry that I left something out. I was trying to get all the information in but overlooked Dominick's death date.

Civil registration only began in 1864 (earlier for non-RC marrs), so you'ld really be looking for a baptismal record, and obviously, it really helps to know where in Ireland this took place.

Thank you for advising the details when registration started. Some details I have just say that John Matthews was born in Dublin. Probably not detailed enough. Thanks for your help. At this stage, I don't know where I can go next. Will leave it in abeyance for now as I don't know how to find the baptismal records.

Try Free Reg for baptisms, marriages and burials it may give you some clues.

Hi Robin- I'm also in Australia. I just needed to get advice on how to get a birth certificate from Ireland with the information that I have. I applied for John's fathers death certificate with no trouble as he died in Liverpool.
I will now try for John's birth certificate per Racines info.
