I am trying to trace the Trotman family. I have traced back to Thomas Trotman b 1821 probably in Siston Gloucestershire. I have obtained a copy of his marriage certificate which confirms that he married Hannah Silman in 1844. The marriage certificate names Aaron Trotman (still alive at that time) as Thomas' father and one of the witnesses is John Trotman (possibly Thomas' brother?).
I can find no trace of an Aaron Trotman in the Siston area.
Can anyone find any trace of Aaron ? or any other information that may help.
Thanks
Sarah

Unless the father was a witness to the marriage, there is no certainty that he was alive at the time of the 1844 event

On the marriage cert it does say that Hannah's father is deceased but it doesn't say anything next to Aaron's name so I assumed he was still alive.
I had found the 1841 record - but hadn't noticed the box saying he wasn't born in gloucestershire - thanks.
In which case they could originally be from anywhere !

I had found the Tom Trotman 1820 baptism in Cliffe Pypard, wilts, but was unsure if this was the correct one as although there is alot of children for Aaron & Esther there is not a John Trotman born circa 1811.
I guess as there as very few Aaron Trotman's this has to be the right one though ?

Thomas & Hannah had 3 children that I am aware of - Henry b 1848, George b 15/8/1851 ( 2x grt grandfather) and Thomas d 1853.

Thomas & hannah's marriage certificate is very vague about their ages - it just states that they were 'of full age' !

Evidently two different Aarons. Aaron & Martha married while Aaron & Esther were still having children:

On the 1851 census Thomas says he was born Siston, Gloucestershire.

This death seems more likely than the one I posted earlier

Thomas was living in Siston in 1841.....possibly got confused

Sarah

Sarah Report 13 Mar 2009 14:22

Thomas seems to be confused ! In the 1841 census he ticked the box to say that he wasn't born in Siston Gloucestershire then in the 1851 census he said that he was born there. As he doesn't appear to know how old he was when he got married - I would say that his memory is not the best !

Any thoughts about all the info provided?

Sarah

Sarah Report 13 Mar 2009 15:03

Lots of thoughts !

First of all thank you to everyone for the all the help - it's amazing how much information can be found out in such a short space of time.

It certainly seems as though the Aaron & Hester from Cliffe Pypard are the best match to be Thomas' parents. My only concern is that there is no mention of a John in Thomas' siblings. he is living with a John Trotman in the 1841 census & John is also a witness to his marriage. I suppose it is possible that John could be a cousin or uncle rather than a brother.

May have to do some more research on the Cliffe Pypard connection - it is a tiny place so may be able to find out something.

Sarah

Sarah Report 13 Mar 2009 17:28

I am now just puzzling over the John Trotman (b 1811) connection. He doesn't appear to be Thomas' brother. I can find no trace of John's birth or marriage on Ancestry.com. I also double checked that George Trotman b1815 wasn't calling himself John - but I can trace George on the later census.
John is on the 1841, 1851 & 1861 census & he has 2 sons called Aaron which would lead me to believe that Aaron is a family name, thus connecting him back to Thomas' father Aaron.
If I could find some connection to a John Trotman it would confirm that I am following the correct line.
Thanks again Ricochet & margaret for all your help - it's much appreciated.
