Hi Victoria

Many thanks for the website. I haven't found anything I'm sure about on Ellen yet but my attention is beginning to wander and I've found some marriages with the later generations of family.

Best wishes

I know the area well, Boxmoor prob better than Watford actually.

The house stayed in the Tomlin family for 100 years because My Daniel and Florence bought the house over the years. A couple of years after my Daniel died ( he died in his 30's - his Horse came home without him, it had flung him off somewhere), Florence had a son Henry George.( named Dead Daniel as his dad lol! 5 year pregnancy Uh huh!)

(Henry) known as George or 'Tom' George never married , and died in the house he was born in aged 88, just a few years ago.

The other children of the marriage were all 3 girls, who all married, so that ended that Tomlin line.

Hi Minnie

I'm sure we're related somewhere along the line. My mom often talked of Watford. I left England when I was 4 so don't know the area.

There seemed to be lots of Daniel Tomlins - very easy to mix them up. I have a grandson Daniel, but he's not a Tomlin!

Lovely to have a house in the family for 100 years - you must know a lot of its history.

Good luck with your Tomlins.

MMm. not related - well, are probably but not in the way I thought.

actually this has all set me back a peg or two, because, as you do occasionally, I worked on an assumption.....!

Tiddle tiddle ! Why was I tight fisted and not buy My Daniel & Florences wedding cert? DOH! how silly I am.

As I said, we are still prob related. My Tomlins owned the same house in Watford for over 100 years. Near the football ground

update:
IGNORE ME! I have got the wedding cert - My Daniels father was called Daniel too. A labourer
My Daniel married in Dec 1902- aged 22 - residence watford ( helpfully).

You wouldnt want to be related to someone as daft as me anyway! :-))

Updated again....
I do remeber sussing this out now.
My Daniel in 1891 is

Source Citation: Class: RG12; Piece: 1127; Folio 189; Page 15; GSU roll: 6096237.

he's visting somewhere in 1901 census

Hi Minnie

Thanks for your contact. My grandfather Daniel Tomlin married Emily Pearce in 1911 and they had nine children, my mother Gladys was the oldest followed by another four girls and four boys. Daniel died in 1956.

Do you have any other Tomlin family members - I remember my mother talking of a Lillian (Lil) and a Florence so they could have been related from the earlier Daniel (1811), may have been cousins?? Daniel had at least two brothers.

Best wishes

Liz

Look up the marriages on http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

click on the page number and it will give you the grooms names

the Berkhampstead one is most likely as it nearest to Hemel Hempstead or the Pancras one as it was near where she was working

Hi Elizabeth.

I am related to that family Tomlin, thru Daniel.

not that I can tell you any more about Ellen- sorry.

Daniel married in Watford, and had 3 daughters, can look up dates if you want me to.

His wife was Florence Vincent

Alice Ellen 1904,
Lillian florence 1907
Edith louisa 1909

(If Daniel was your grandfather, you MUST be my mothers cousin - he was her grandfather too, although he died before she was born)

Dear Victoria

Many thanks for all the info on Ellen and family. I wish I knew the names of the bridegrooms of the various Ellens in the marriages as my mother often spoke of various relatives and I might remember the name.

If she is the servant in the 1891 census she must have changed from the normal female occupation of my family of straw plaiter, which in Mary Anne's case eventually became a straw hat maker.

Mary Anne Pipkin was my great grandmother and Edward's third and last wife. Daniel was my grandfather. Edward was supposed to be "an old devil" but my mother knew him as a child and thought a great deal of him.

Thanks for the help

Liz

Eaj123 Report 12 Mar 2009 00:41

Hi JenW

Ellen was born about 1871 according to census and Edward's first wife, Sarah Rhodes, who he married in 1870, died in 1872 - with the census date it's possible that Ellen was born in 1872 and Sarah died in childbirth.

Clara Simmons was wife no 2 and they were married in 1876 so couldn't (I don't think!) have been Ellen's mother. (I'm descended from wife no 3 married 1888!).

It's a pity that the census isn't taken every five years - the jump from 10 to 20 years old is very big and much can happen in that time!

Many thanks

Liz

Eaj123 Report 12 Mar 2009 00:03

I have an Ellen Tomlin, born about 1871 in Hemel Hempstead Hertfordshire. Her father was Edward Tomlin (1850) and mother Sarah Rhodes (1851-1872).

In the 1881 census she was living at Cowper Road Hemel Hempstead.

The 1891 census she would have been about 20 and presumably married but no idea of her married name, or if she was still alive.

Can anyone find something about Ellen after 1881?

Thanks

Liz
