Thanks Diddydoris
It's not James I am looking for it is Richard born c1882 and who his wife is. I think I have a lead in the 1901 census as he was living with a George Meadow and wife Sarah M in Litherland and is down as brother in law . I have been in touch with a member of George Meadows family and he knows nothing of Richard so now I can assume he is brother in law to Sarah M Meadows who's maiden name is Mullett I think just going to check this out
Thanks again for your help

I think your looking in the wrong place....if James was the eldest and born 1903, he's not going to be on 1901 census on ancestry. You need to look on www.1911census.co.uk to find James with some brothers and sisters.

Just received the marriage certificate of James Askew and Eileen Ainscough. Residence at time of marriage was 5 Howley Stree,Kirkdale Liverpool James's father was named Richard and he was a cotton porter.
It's amazing how much information is given on one marriage certificate.
Just want to thank everyone again for all their help maybe I can get a bit further now
Thanks Debby

Marriages Dec 1923
Askew James (Robinson) W. Derby 8b 538

From the image, looking for a Robinson married to an Askew in that place and quarter:

... argh. Pages of Robinsons. (Fortunately, *one* Robinson has been transcribed so far for that quarter, so I was at least able to find the image at Ancestry.) A stroke of luck. I was not going to go beyond the second page (which only goes to Ethel), and there we are at the top.

Annie Robinson married Askew, same registration details.

There's no matching death, but that's probably for want of transcription.

EvieBeavie Report 12 Mar 2009 19:28

So I'm still confused.

We have:

Births Mar 1903
Askew James Liverpool 8b 40

who matches the known info about your James Askew.

"James Askew was born 1903 died 1979 married to Eileen Ainscough 1931 .... I have so much information on James Askew and yet still can't find his parents !!!"

Marriages Dec 1931
Ainscough Eileen (Askew) Liverpool 8b 324
Askew James (Ainscough) Liverpool 8b 324

That marriage can be found by anyone, free of charge, in about two seconds, at

http://www.freebmd.org.uk

by searching for the marriage of Askew and Ainscough in 1931.

That marriage certificate will give the name of James Askew's father.

The marriage of his father can then likely be found, and that will provide James's mother's name.

The 1903 birth certificate will show whether those were the parents of that James Askew. And then they can be looked for in the 1911 census, and so on back.

"He was married before and had one child, I think, but don't know any names of child or previous wife. "

Well, let's see what FreeBMD says.

For James Askew (no middle initial) in the Liverpool area, 1910 to 1923, we have only:

Marriages Dec 1923
Askew James (Robinson) W. Derby 8b 538

It seems the wife's entry hasn't been transcribed yet. So the original image would have to be checked. (I'm attempting to do that at Ancestry, but either my server or Ancestry is on go-slow, and I'm not getting there yet.)

There seems to have been one birth to the couple:

Births Mar 1925
Askew Margaret M (Robinson) W.Derby 8b 761

(I also checked the full post-1916 index at Ancestry in case there were others not yet transcribed by FreeBMD.)

There is no death in that name up to 1933, but the transcriptions are probably incomplete.

"James was the oldest of six children John, Anthony, Richard, Lily and Dorothy, Looked on 1901 census but none that match."

If he was born in 1903, and he was the oldest, they are not going to be in the 1901 census. Did you mean the 1911?
