that was me saying GR T&Cs ............ there was a reason


so many people in the past have said "and who are you to say we shouldn't post more than one thread on the same topic. It's my right to do whatever I want"


There's the rationale.


The personal rationale for me is the amount of time I have wasted in the past finding information for someone on, eg, this board, only to find that all the work has been done on another board, and possibly even on a 3rd or 4th board. I could have spent those hours helping someone else!




In fact, most of the people who help do look on all of the boards at some time during their sessions on the computer, so a thread on one board is just as likely to attract attention as 3.


I'm sorry if it sounded official ........... but mentioning the T&Cs was my way of dealing with past offensive remarks made in response to a gentle reminder tlike Julie

Just looked through the thread again. I didn't have a problem with what Julie had written...Julie merely stated that one thread was enough....it was the next post that started quoting T&C's that seemed a bit official.

But hey.......lifes too short for this.......we researchers more than most must understand that!

Well...sorry all....didn't mean to set fires burning on this.

Julie....I wasn't taking the P....in fact if you knew me it would be the last thing you would accuse me of. I was merely confused about which board to put that specific request on.
Not being aware that there were rules around this I thought it would be appropriate to try out the other boards.
Being a new boy I would probably have found it more helpful for someone to come in and say "Not sure whether you are aware Robert...but its not really the done thing to post the same thread on more than one board"

Quoting GU T&C's at a new user probably isn't the best way to welcome people with a common interest into the fold....however....no harm done at all as far as I'm concerned.

You're right there is nothing wrong with providing helpful advice, which i like to think i do......but when someone has 3 threads across 3 different boards with about 15 i think it was saying the same thing that is to me taking the p, now i feel why should i have bothered

The point being made was that it is not for a select few who believe, due to their long standing and experience to tell others how they should conduct themselves on the forum.

There nothing wrong though with providing helpful advice.

Gotta be better than sending a new member scurrying for cover when they get something wrong.

People choose to help in what way they can. Some are enthusiastic about this and spend hours helping others. Others, for whatever reason choose not to follow this line.

I could be wrong, but it seems to me that there are a core on these forums of long standing that believe it their job to moderate any threads they do not agree with.

I thought that was the responsibilty of Genes Reunited.

Julie...as I was the person who said "don't worry" I assume you are refering to me.

I have been active on these boards for the past 2 years whenever I have had time.... helping members out where ever I can both on the boards and behind the scenes. I consider myself very fortunate in making a few very good friends along the way.

No offence taken and no offence meant Julie...I just wanted to "put the record straight".

That's true, the problem is with the way the GR site works as it doen't tell you if a reply has been posted to a thread, it's a complete pain!

No worse than when you request information in a thread you tend to get the same reply back half a dozen times within that same thread. How wasteful is that?

Don't worry about it Robert...when I joined GR 4 years ago I made the same mistake...I got shot down in flames...nothing changes I'm afraid!! It took me ages to post again on the boards!

It is customary not to post a thread in more than one board and if your new then threse things happen until you get the hang of it.

Incidently, I see nothing in the GR T&C's that say "only one thread on a topic should be posted!" Have a feeling I've just set myself up for a rebuke.
