Find Ancestors

I am trying to trace my fathers family who were all miners in the Pucklechurch area of Gloucestershire. I have managed to get as far back as Aaron Thompson born circa 1815. His first wife was Lydia ? born circa 1818. The married circa 1835. Lydia died in 1858 & Aaron married again in 1867 to Elizabeth Bristow(e) nee Hurcomb(e).
I know Aaron's mother was called Ann as she was living with him in the 1861 census & she was born circa 1780.
At the moment I can find no records of Aaron's first marriage & his birth. According to the census results he was born in Pucklechurch, as was his mother.
Does anyone have any idea where I can look ?
Also I am trying to trace my Great Grandfathers military records. He served in WW1, his name was Gilbert Henry Thompson b 1896 in Mangotsfield, Gloucestershire. I believe he may have served with the Queens Royal Regiment as some notes in his diary mention 'Queens'. Unfortunately I do not have his ID no. There are some medal records for Gilbert H Thompson but how can I be sure it is the right one ?

he was a private, unfortunately most of the service records were burnt and I can't see his in the surviving ones

According to google and genuki the Pucklechurch records are kept at the Bristol records office. Did they have any children whose births would be on freeBMD? You could get Lydias maiden name and have both sides of the marriage to search for.
