Just found out he was actually born Lawrence Metcalfe but changed his name to Thompson after his mam married, not sure if it was by deed poll but Thompson was the name he used for the rest of his life.

Would he have been able to use the name Thompson to sign in to the navy if it wasnt by deed poll?
And could his death been registered in Thompson the same way?

Thanks in advance for any help

Thanks Ricochet

Looks like another birth cert to add to my order list!
If his father was Thompson, could Lawrence have been adopted by him as he was always known as Thompson and are there adoption certificates I can trace

Well, the mother of the one born in Tynemouth was presumably unmarried, (the MMN was the same as the child's registered surname) so it seems likely to be the right one.

If, as seems probable, the father was not named on the cert, you may never know who his natural father was.........

Hi,
Can somebody please help me confirm the birth name of Lawrence.
He is the son of George Thompson and Gladys nee Hillary born possibly 1919. I have the parents married in Newcastle upon Tyne 1923 and can find a Lawrence Hillary born 1919 in Tynemouth, which is next to Newcastle so fits in but I think I might have gone down another wrong road again!
Thanks for reading this
