this might be the one
Name: Samuel Lawford Year of Registration: 1867 Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar District: Islington County: Greater London, London, Middlesex Volume: 1b Page: 259 (
Darren, I can't find a death or marriage for him in VIC , do you have his death/marriage certs, these will give lots of useful info on. What about birth certs of his children? I think they give "how long in colony"

Hi Darren
Had a bit of a look at the indexes and I reckon I've 'cracked the case'! :-)
Samuel did not die in Victoria in 1919, but his wife did.
Surname: LAWFORD Given Names: Emily Gerte Event: D Father: Baldwin Josh Mother: Mary Elizth PHILLIPS Age: 46 Death Place: Echuca Year: 1919 Reg. Number: 6505
She was born in 1873 in Amhurst Vic, to Joseph BALDWIN & Mary Elizabeth PHILLIPS. Joseph & Mary married in Vic in 1864 (reg 2434).
I cannot find Samuel & Emily's marriage in Vic or NSW or Qld. Their 2 eldest chn were born in NSW. They had 6 sons.
1. Oliver b. 1894 Corowa NSW (reg 11266, as Ollie), m. Margaret MORRISON 1925/9783 [Vic], d. 1967/17316 Morrisons aged 72
2. Rupert Stanley b. 1896 Tocumwal NSW (reg 26170), m. Henrietta Maude McCANN 1922/3691 [Vic], d. 1956/24434 Yarr aged 60
3. Joseph Adrain b. 1898/16105 Barwon, d. 1916/5635 Echuca aged 18 [as Adrian Joseph]
4. Frederick Wm b. 1900/24088 Barwon, m. Cath Standlars RICE 1923 [Vic], d. 1974/5856 Echuca aged 73
5. John Stephen b. 1908/16603 Barwon, m. Elsie May RICKARD 1930, d. 1966/9797 Nathalia aged 57
6. Alfred b. 1909/24686 Barwon, d. 1924 Kingston aged 15
Samuel died in Mooroopna:
Surname: LAWFORD Given Names: Samuel Father: Lawford Fredk Mother: Jane GIBBONS Death Place: MPNA Age: 72 Year: 1942 Reg Number: 25645 Event: D
Oliver and Rupert both enlisted in WWI, both on the same day (3 Mar 1916). Oliver was 21 and Rupert was 19. Both were labourers and both showed next of kin as father Samuel of “Barmah” via Picola, Vic. Oliver's application was rejected but Rupert served (he was wounded in action in Oct 1917). See www.naa.gov.au (RecordSearch).
Then I noticed a Frederick Wm SWAN who showed as born in Barmah Vic with next of kin Uncle Samuel LAWFORD (both parents decd). He also enlisted 3/3/1916. This led to me finding out that Fredk's mother Jane was a Lawford...and Samuel's sister. Her death:
Surname: SWAN Given Names: Jane Event: D Father: Lawford Fred Wm Mother: Jane GIBBONS Age: 23 Death Place: UNKNOWN Year: 1883 Reg Number: 309
There was an inquest (302); death place was Barmah and cause of death was 'congestion of lungs'.
Jane married Daniel Douglas McGregor SWAN in 1880 (reg 5265); shows her birthplace as London.
This led me to look for their immigration and lo and behold, here is the whole family as unassisted immigrants; Samuel was only 3 when they arrived:
LAWFORD FREDK 30 APR 1871 BENGAL B 302 002 LAWFORD JANE 8 APR 1871 BENGAL B 302 002 LAWFORD JANE 27 APR 1871 BENGAL B 302 002 LAWFORD SAMUEL 3 APR 1871 BENGAL B 302 002 LAWFORD WM 5 APR 1871 BENGAL B 302 002
Here is Samuel's mother Jane's death, quite young:
Surname: LAWFORD Given Names: Jane Event: D Father: Gibbins Byham Mother: Elizabeth Age: 47 Death Place: YARRAWONGA Year: 1888 Reg Number: 8141
There is a marriage in Islington, London in Jun qtr 1861 between Frederick LAWFORD and Jane GIBBINS (1b 302). Also a death for a Byham GIBBONS in Islington in Dec qtr 1859.
I reckon the birth in Islington that Victoria found is most probably the right one :-) Also a birth for Wm LAWFORD in Islington in Mar qtr 1865 and Jane LAWFORD in Islington Jun qtr 1862. They appear to have dodged the UK censuses quite neatly!!!
Samuel's brother Wm married in 1890 to Margaret Ann Bloodworth JOHNSON in Victoria (reg 5784, also shows Wm as b. London). All their children were born in Corowa district, NSW. William LAWFORD died in Mulwala, Corowa district aged 73, father Frederick (reg 21177). His wife Margaret died in Corowa district in 1936, father Alan (reg 19473).
By the by, Barmah, Picola, Echuca and Nathalia are all quite close together. Just out of interest, how are you connected to this family, Darren? Probably best to start by getting a death or marriage certificate of the direct link and going back from there...

Could maybe find Byham & Elizabeth GIBBONS/GIBBINS in 1851 census?
I can't find Frederick LAWFORD's death (Samuel's father). He might show up in London in 1861 census tho (not sure if it would be before he married Jane)?

I assume you mean this Samuel, as stated previously I cannot find Samuel & Emily's marriage in Vic or NSW or Qld.
Samuel died in Mooroopna:
Surname: LAWFORD Given Names: Samuel Father: Lawford Fredk Mother: Jane GIBBONS Death Place: MPNA Age: 72 Year: 1942 Reg Number: 25645 Event: D
You need an 1861 census lookup to try to track down Frederick. Sorry I can't help there but there are ppl offering them on here. Try the threads on the Records Office board. Your other option would be to order Fredk & Jane's marriage certificate from the GRO.
:-)

Thanks Cherilyn i will look at the records office regards darren

Hi Darren,
Did you find all you wanted on the Lawford and Swan families as I originally came from the Picola, Barmah, Nathalia district and have many local history books on the district if you wanted any look ups on this family I would be happy to help you out.
Regards,
Marianne.
