Find Ancestors

Am trying to find the marriage between James Hodgins born c1841 of the 89th Irish Regiment and Unknown Desiree born 1851. They probably married in India after 1869. Their first child arrived 14 March 1872. Can anyone check to see if there is a marriage record.

None that I can find - 3 pages for births, 1 page for deaths but 0 pages for marriage.

Sorry, it was not any of them.

I took a quick look on the census to try to find them and see that there are two boys born during the 1870's in India.

The Army births and Baptims register has the following births listed

If you were to order the birth certificate you would at least learn mother's maiden name

There is a Desiree Deborah JOY b 1850 Norwich the only Desiree on BMD for within 5 yrs of her birth of what you said.

I see she is missing in the 1881 census found her in the 1871 with her parents.
Could be her....... No Marriage for her.

Thanks for that. I presumed Desiree was her surname. I dont think this can be her as she was in India giving birth in March 1872.

I have looked for a birth between 1849-1853 for a surname of( Desiree)
in BMD there is not one.
Unless she was born else where ?

It is possible she gave birth in 1872 in India.
I found this Desieree Joy born 1850 still in UK in 1871 !

Had a whole year to get pregnant !!


I looked at Amy records for a marriage, to no avail.

If this is the person you are looking for and his wife was born in France then there is a chance obviously that they may have married there if he had been stationed there at any point the youngest child was born back here in the UK I am unfamiliar with the info on birth certs in England but will the mothers maiden name not be on it.

Is this the death of Desiree Hodgins albeit in Devon as opposed to Lancashire?

That must be them. Thank you so much. Is that the 1881 Census? I didnt know there was a son Alfred aged 14. You said he was the youngest son though? Is there a birth registered for him anywhere? The daughter Emily born 1872 must have died. Its funny that I cant find a marriage or what is the actual names for Desiree! Its going to be difficult to find a marriage for them if they married abroad.
Brenda - yes that is her death in Plymouth. The whole family ended up in Plymouth.

Alfred is 14 days old.

This could be the birth and would give you mmn. They had 6 weeks to register a birth.

on familyrelatives ( 1866 - 1920) there are only 8 deaths listed in Plymouth for Hodgins and they are from 1883 to 1910 and 12 births in total beginning 1883 - 1919

It is the 1881 census. Alfreds birth cert is the best bet for finding out his parents marraige date and mothers maiden name as atleast it was in this country and is easy to obtain. I found the info on
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/default.asp but there is no details of births or deaths for him on it.
