I'm from Middlesex county, myself. The east end of London ... Ontario. ;)

Roots all over England but not the two H'shires, so I've never paid much attention to 'em!

Janey - you must forgive me for not knowing my counties very well. I am learning though! We only have ten provinces in Canada so it is easy to know them all. England has such a long and rich history and the counties have changed somewhat over the centuries. Hertfordshire would make much more sense as far as proximity to Kent goes. Herefordshire is quite a ways from Kent county. I will check things out some more. Thanks again for the help.

Who knows??

1851

Name: Matilda King
Age: 69
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1782
Relation: Wife
Spouse's Name: William
> Where born: Hertfordshire, England

1861

Name: Matilda King
Age: 52
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1809
Relation: Wife
Spouse's Name: William
> Where born: Hereford

I checked the images: 1851 definitely says T, 1861 definitely says E.

And in 1861, William is a Chelsea Pensioner (Lab in 1851) -- i.e. he was indeed a soldier.

I knew it! I'm always right and I never lie. ;)

The similarities between Emma and your Edward were just too striking.

Glad that worked out -- and now, pre-registration/census, I'll be of no further use to you I fear. Good luck!

Just one thing you might clarify:

"I have since found out that his mother's maiden name was Barber and apparently she came from Herfordshire."

Herefordshire (as compared to Hertfordshire)?

Hello Owen,
To confuse you even more, I have 2 King families in my tree.
both girls married Jarretts.
Ofcourse its possible they are not your Kings

Charlotte Elizabeth King 1843 Fawkham Kent ...married William Jarrett.
I cant find King parents

Sarah King 1875 Horton Nr Rochester Kent ...married Thomas Jarret.
Father Alfred King 1844 Kent .... his father William King 1816 ....his father William King 1791 Kent

I did find a William King Married Matilda Barber 28 oct 1822 Bexley Kent

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! JaneyCanuck - your roundabout way of searching finally resulted in a truly positive find. Your link from Emma Franklin to my Edward King led me to search for a town called Darenth, which is listed as the town Edward was living in at age 1. I figured that if he was only one at time of census the chances are good that he was born there. Luckily, Darenth is one of the towns that is on the Medway Council site of parish records. Wouldn't you know it, but I found the baptism record for Edward Abraham King in 1840 and his parents were William and Matilda. I have since found out that his mother's maiden name was Barber and apparently she came from Herfordshire. Now the search deepens. Thanks again and all the best in your own family search.

Ah, and we must always remember that registration was still spotty at that time. Your Edward's birth, if he isn't one of the Edwards we've been looking at, may just not have been registered.

I found that shared "Grimston" birthplace quite interesting.

Any trace of baptisms for the other kids?

This looks like Emma:

Births Mar 1846
King Emma Dinah N Aylesford 5 440

Thanks for the input Janey. I found the baptism record for the Edward King that you mention

Name: Edward King
Year of Registration: 1842
Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar
District: North Aylesford
County: Kent
Volume: 5
Page: 401

However, his parents are listed as Thomas and Ann King. Maybe the William and Matilda in the census are actually the grandparents. Who knows? I haven't ordered the certificate for this Edward but I couldn't find any other baptism records for the North Aylesford district for a Edward King.

Although the 1841 is a little different ...

William King 50
Matilda King 30
Sarah King 13
Charlotte King 11
John King 10
Ellen King 5
Anne King 3
Edward King 1

Civil parish: Darenth
County/Island: Kent
Registration district: Dartford

1861 in Northfleet:

William King 80
Matilda King 52
William King 30
Sarah King 29
Emma King 17
George King 14
Florence King 5
William Earl 31

That William was already 50 in 1841.

It's conceivable he was a soldier before that time.

One of my grx2 grandmothers called her father a soldier on her marriage certificate c1860, and it was a long time since he'd been that.

JaneyCanuck Report 2 Jul 2009 18:06

This could possibly be that Emma King's household in 1851:

William King 70 - occupation labourer
Matilda King 69
Ellen King 17
Ann King 15
Edward King 10
Emma King 7
George King 5
William Thurston 43
Orpha Smith 77

Civil parish: Northfleet
County/Island: Kent
Registration district: North Aylesford

The children are all shown as daughter and son, but that's a tad hard to believe.

That Edward matches with the birth Victoria posted long ago:

Name: Edward King
Year of Registration: 1842
Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar
District: North Aylesford
County: Kent
Volume: 5
Page: 401

If you google Grimston, Kent, it does seem to have been a place name a long time ago. At present the name seems to survive as street/property names in Folkestone.

If you search at Ancestry in all censuses combined for anyone born in Grimston, Kent, this is one of three results:

1871

Name: Emma Franklin
Age: 27
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1844
Relation: Wife
Spouse's Name: Richard
Where born: Grimston, Kent, England

Civil parish: Stepney
Ecclesiastical parish: St James
Town: London
Registration district: Stepney

Richard Franklin 26
Emma Franklin 27
William Franklin 3

This could be the marriage:

Marriages Dec 1865
Anthony William E. London 1c 50
> FRANKLIN Richard E London 1c 50
> King Emma E London 1c 50
Thing Emma E. London 1c 50
Willmer_on Susan E London 1c 50

Thank you to everyone who has submitted their opinions and did research of their own for my search. It is greatly appreciated. I haven't done any updates lately as I haven't found anything of any great use. However I just came onto something that holds promise.

I found a census record from 1851 that lists the following

Mary A. King, married, age 65, Mariner's wife, born Surrey, Rotherhill

Grace King, daughter, age 24, born Rotherhill

Rachel King, daughter, age 21, born Rotherhill

Elizabeth King, daughter, age 14, born Kent, Deptford

Edward King, son, age 9, born Kent, Deptford

on free bmd I found a Elizabeth King born in the Sep quarter of 1837 in Greenwich district (of which Deptford is a part of). No birth record yet of a Edward Abraham, BUT there is a Edward William in Jun 1841 quarter in the Greenwich district. I will have to order the certificates to find out if in fact this is my Edward. What do you all think?

By the way, the 1871census says that Edward was born in Grimston, Kent. I am told that no such town exists. But the place name occurs one other time on the same page for someone else and Gravesend occurs in other places so to the person recording the census there was a difference between "Kent Grimston" and "Kent Gravesend". Anyone heard of such a place?

I tried searching the church records for other Kings that were married in the same church around the same time, in case I came across a sibling of Edwards. Nothing yet but these are the names of the Kings I did find with their father's names. Maybe their fathers were brothers of William King?

1.Frederick King, married to Sophia Wilkins,1863, father was James King
2. George King, married to Mary Tucker, 1851, father was Thomas King
3. Priscilla Ann King, married to Thomas Samuel Bryant, 1849, father John King
4. Thomas Henry King, married to Naomi Keary (?), 1856, father Thomas King

Minnie - in the 1871 census Edward and Matilda are listed as living in Stepney, London and Edward is listed as an unemployed coalminer. The next census is 1881 and he is living at Cliffe, Kent and is a engine driver and a concrete works. Their children in 1871 were only Edward who died at age one.
