Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! JaneyCanuck - your roundabout way of searching finally resulted in a truly positive find. Your link from Emma Franklin to my Edward King led me to search for a town called Darenth, which is listed as the town Edward was living in at age 1. I figured that if he was only one at time of census the chances are good that he was born there. Luckily, Darenth is one of the towns that is on the Medway Council site of parish records. Wouldn't you know it, but I found the baptism record for Edward Abraham King in 1840 and his parents were William and Matilda. I have since found out that his mother's maiden name was Barber and apparently she came from Herfordshire. Now the search deepens. Thanks again and all the best in your own family search.

Hello Owen,
To confuse you even more, I have 2 King families in my tree.
both girls married Jarretts.
Ofcourse its possible they are not your Kings

Charlotte Elizabeth King 1843 Fawkham Kent ...married William Jarrett.
I cant find King parents

Sarah King 1875 Horton Nr Rochester Kent ...married Thomas Jarret.
Father Alfred King 1844 Kent .... his father William King 1816 ....his father William King 1791 Kent

I did find a William King Married Matilda Barber 28 oct 1822 Bexley Kent

I knew it! I'm always right and I never lie. ;)

The similarities between Emma and your Edward were just too striking.

Glad that worked out -- and now, pre-registration/census, I'll be of no further use to you I fear. Good luck!

Just one thing you might clarify:

"I have since found out that his mother's maiden name was Barber and apparently she came from Herfordshire."

Herefordshire (as compared to Hertfordshire)?

Who knows??

1851

Name: Matilda King
Age: 69
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1782
Relation: Wife
Spouse's Name: William
> Where born: Hertfordshire, England

1861

Name: Matilda King
Age: 52
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1809
Relation: Wife
Spouse's Name: William
> Where born: Hereford

I checked the images: 1851 definitely says T, 1861 definitely says E.

And in 1861, William is a Chelsea Pensioner (Lab in 1851) -- i.e. he was indeed a soldier.

Janey - you must forgive me for not knowing my counties very well. I am learning though! We only have ten provinces in Canada so it is easy to know them all. England has such a long and rich history and the counties have changed somewhat over the centuries. Hertfordshire would make much more sense as far as proximity to Kent goes. Herefordshire is quite a ways from Kent county. I will check things out some more. Thanks again for the help.

I'm from Middlesex county, myself. The east end of London ... Ontario. ;)

Roots all over England but not the two H'shires, so I've never paid much attention to 'em!
