Find Ancestors

Not sure if I can help, I have index of marriages in Norfolk 1801-1837.

Had a quick look, but not sure which names to look for as several have been mentioned.

There is a marriage of John Miles to Sarah Tillett in Wymondham on 6/3/1810 if this helps?

Plenty other Miles' marriages in Gt Yarmouth, Wymondham etc

I read the heading:

"Elizabeth 1816 Miles from Norfolk"

and thought ... hmm ... wouldn't that put her in Russia or someplace??

only the birth cert will tell who the mother was.

interesting that she was using the married name prior to the marriage but presumably that was for appearances sake.

regarding her age, she gives a different dob on each of the census records, 1861 & 1871 have it around 1827 so I think the 1851 is wrong.

Is there a reason to think their mother was not Elizabeth Miles?

Was Elizabeth Miles somewhere else in 1851? I took her to be the Elizabeth Delay in the 1851 census I posted at the very top,

although not yet married to Charles Delay.

But she may not have been the mother of the children, I guess.

Edmund Delay's birth was registered within the 3 months preceding the 1851 census showing Elizabeth and Charles Delay as husband and wife.

I would also get the brith certs of
Charles Delay b. 1849 Kensington 1st qtr
Edmund Delay b.1851 Kensington 1st qtr

to see who their mother was.
suspect that she died in child birth or very soon after

Yeah. That's the one I've been talking about all along, and suggesting all along that he needs to order as the first order of business.

I thought Peter could find it at FreeBMD himself, since he should always check the image to verify the transcription before ordering the certificate, anyhow.

her father shown as William and his father as Charles

this is a better match for her birth

Did you catch my posts sandwiched in up there, Victoria?

Charles and Elizabeth married after two children were born, although they represented themselves in 1851 as married.

That would fit with one of them having been previously married -- perhaps Charles, in the marriage you found.

Peter needs the Charles + Elizabeth marriage certificate -- you don't seem to have it, Peter? If it's ancestors being sought.

1861 census gives Elizabeths place of birth as Southrepps Norfolk
age 30.
lving at the Erpingham Union Workhouse , says she is married but (illegible) deserted.

That would fit with what I was wondering, Victoria -- since they married in 1851 after the births of two children.

this may or may not be him as this would imply he was married before.

Hmm. They married after the 1851 census, but in that census they had two children.

Is it possible that one was previously married? The marriage certificate would tell that too, and if it was Elizabeth, her birth surname.

The children's births are at FreeBMD, registered with surname Delay.

They married in England and their marriage is easily findable at FreeBMD:

The marriage certificate would give her father's name, and if you were lucky you might find info on him, and a parent might even be living in the 1841-51 censuses.
