Angela Report 13 Feb 2009 22:30

Trying to find the father of my nan, Ernest Whiting, thought I had found him but the date is wrong. Is on the 1911 Census as being 21 yrs of age (B1890), Long Eaton, Derbyshire. Parents: William WHITING and Harriett (nee LOWE).

Any help greatly appreciated before I throw my computer out of the window!!!!!

So....if the date is wrong on the 1911 census, when was he born?

Angela

Angela Report 13 Feb 2009 22:40

Hi Sue, I originally thought his date of birth was 1874/5 but further investigation tells me this is wrong and when I found him on the 1911 census aged 21 that confirmed to me that his date of birth was actually 1890.

Hope that makes sense!

is 21 the correct age? what age are his parents on the 1911 census?

Angela

Angela Report 13 Feb 2009 22:58

Hi Grumpy!!

Don't have his parents ages in 1911 as he is down as being "a visitor" at my grt nan's house (coincidence that he fathered two of her children 5 and 7 years later - out of wedlock!!!!) But think I might have found him on the 1891 census - aged 2. His parents were William aged 44 and Harriett aged 38. I am wondering if the Ernest born about 1875 did not survive and this 2nd son was named after him.

Any thoughts?

Believe his place of birth to be Long Eaton, W. Derby.

Angela
don't be confused by Ernest frederick - He was born in West derby which is a suburb of Liverpool NOT in Derbyshire

Long Eaton is Derbyshire not W Derby

Grumpy

Grumpy Report 13 Feb 2009 23:24

lancashireann is correct, but there are no births for ernest showing on freebmd for derbyshire vol 7b between the years 1888 and 1891, if yo can put up the details of the 1891 census that you think you have found him on????????

Angela

Angela Report 13 Feb 2009 23:35

ooops, geography was never by strongest subject at school. Still a bit new to this so unsure as how to post details of census on, but this is what I found on 1891:
Father: William Whiting "Head" - age 44
Mother: Harriett "Wife" - aged 38
Ernest: aged "not very clear looks like 6 tho" (B1885'ish)?
Lettia: aged 8
May: aged 6
Charles: aged 3

No sign of Ernest on 1901 although Lettia, May and Charles are all there 10 yrs older and a further child: Florence aged 8.

Thank you so much to all of you that have tried to help me with this. I think I was right in first place with his DOB being 1875'ish. But I just wonder if he lied about his real age on the 1911 census by saying he was 21 instead of 36 as he obviously had his wicked way with my grt nan (twice at least) to have two children out of wedlock with her. I think I found is death in 1919 (Oct,Nov,Dec Qtr). but somehow I find this difficult to fathom out as I have a letter written to my nan from Daddy Ernest (she was born in 1916) which would make her only being up to 3 yrs of age and the content of the letter is not like one you would write to a 3 yr old. Can anyone advice on where to look next.

Many thanks. Angela

Grumpy

Grumpy Report 14 Feb 2009 00:51

angela you would have to confirm that it was his death in 1919 and the only way to do that is buy a death certificate. you have to some times but if you think the letter is inappropriate it might not be his death, no date on the letter?

as an aside my wife's gr gr grandmother had nine children with the same man before they married 23 years after the first one was born and both man and wife on the marriage certificate are aged 25?? that one was hard to find
