I wonder if anyone can help. I am trying to find birth record for Ellis Ashton. I know from marriage certificate that in 1915 when he married Margaret Ann Jackson in Bolton by Bowland, his age is given as 45 years - which means he was born in 1870. But I cannot find a birth for that year. I have looked on all the sites I have access to with no luck. Any help would be much appreciated, Thanks

Registration pre 1875 wasnt compulsory so its possible he wasnt registered .
Have you checked FreeBMD or the full GRO records

Thanks everybody for all the help. His fathers name on the marriage certificate is Ellis. He had been married before and was a widower. Bolton by Bowland is in Lancashire. So the Ellis Ashton born in 1873 Clitheroe could be the one.

His name was definitely Ellis and also his fathers name was Ellis. (unless it has been transcribed wrogly as Elias). He married Margaret Jackson in 1915, but I haven't sorted out his first wife yet!!

Thanks for helping it is really appreciated and I will have to now study the info you have all found. Many thanks. The trouble is I am not sure where he was born. On the marriage certificate his father Ellis (deceased) and he was a farmer.

Elias is a farmer in 1861. Seeing as he died when Ellis was very young. or even before he was born, it could be he got the name wrong when he married. I really think this is your family.
