Chrissie2394 Report 5 Feb 2009 20:57

I am struggling to make sense of this. I have Alexander Martin c1819 born Kidderminster, parents shown as John and Sarah on familysearch.

In 1851 census he is shown with daughter Elizabeth c1842 and son William c1844, Ann Edward c1784 listed as mother and Joseph Sale c1790 listed as father in law.

In 1841 I have found an Ann Edward c1786 with 2 daughters, one was named Elizabeth c1826. I realise that if this Elizabeth was the mother of Alexander Martins daughter Elizabeth she would have only been 15/16 at the time. I have not found Alexander in 1841.

I have found two marriages for Alexander the first to Sarah Burbige in 1843 who is Williams mother and the second to Mary Pirks in 1851.

I have been told that on Elizabeths death certificate that her mothers name was given as Elizabeth Edwards and I was wondering if Ann Edward could have been young Elizabeths grandmother. I found a death for an Elizabeth Edwards an wonder if it was a result of childbirth but when I got the certificate it was that of a married woman.

As yet I have not been able to find Elizabeths birth.

Could one of you very clever people make sense of this.

Thanks

Chris

Two points to consider. Firstly, XX-in-law used to be used where we would now say stepXX. Secondly, in 1841, the age of adults (15+) was supposed to be rounded down to a mult of 5, so your Eliz a="15" could have been anything in range 15-19.

Hi mgnv,

Thank you for taking the time to reply. I'm just finding it so confusing with Edwards being the supposed name of young Elizabeths mother and Alexander listing Ann Edward as mother and I just don't understand where Joseph Sale comes into it. Alex is shown as widower in 1851.

Alexander from 1841?

Have a look at the actual census image. Above Alexander are Joseph Edwards 55 and Ann Edawrds 50. Any connection to your Joseph and Ann (his future in laws)??

this is what I've worked out so far

Alexander married Elizabeth Edwards (her mother presumabley was Ann)
Alex & Eliz had a daughter Elizabeth b.1841
Eliz Martin nee Edwards must have died 1841-1843
Alex then married Sarah Burige 1843
their son was William b. 1844

Hi Andrew,

Thank you for that, no wonder I couldn't find him how on earth did you?

Hi Victoria,

That's what I was thinking but couldn't find the marriage so presumed it didn't happen as I'd thought Elizabeth would have been 15/16 when young Elizabeth was born. Perhaps I need to find a death for an Elizabeth Martin. Alexanders wife Sarah was already pregnant with William when she and Alex married in 1843 so he didn't hang about did he.

I don't think that's right, Victoria.
According to the 1851 census Alexander is head and Ann Edwards is his mother. (All relationships are as related to the head.) I think she must have remarried.
Joseph Sale is Alexander's father-in-law so Alexander must have married a Sale.
Then there's the added problem of James Hampton being a nephew.
How does he fit in?

No deaths for an Elizabeth Martin in Kidderminster and only 2 for Worcestershire between Dec 1841 and Dec 1843 (Tewkesbury and Stratford)

Hi Margaret,

Thank you for trying to help. I had wondered if Joseph Sale was the father of Alexanders wife Mary Pirks (I thought she may have perhaps been married before) but couldn't find a marriage for Pirks/Sale

I can't find a marriage for Alex and Elizabeth or death for elz Martin however there is a death for Eliz Edwards
Name: Elizabeth Edwards
Year of Registration: 1841
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
District: Kidderminster
County: Hereford and Worcester, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Worcestershire
Volume: 18
Page: 295
This fits with the birth of Eliz MArtin who was Ch. 26 Dec 1841

I think that the 1851 census of Ann Ewards is probaly wrong and should be mother in law/grandmother

Alex marrage to Mary Pirks is 1851
Alexander Martin
Year of Registration: 1851
Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
District: Kidderminster
County: Hereford and Worcester, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Worcestershire
Volume: 18

Hi Victoria,

Thank you for your help. I will have to check the death record that I have but I think it relates to the death you have found.

There's a tree on Ancestry with Alexander Martin born 1821, Kidderminster, married to Unknown Sale. Their daughter Elizabeth, born 1841 Kidderminster married Thomas Oliver and died 1909, Cleveland, Cuyahoga, Ohio, U.S.A. There's even a photo of her.
