That's a shame it's not the same Lilian. Will of course keep you posted!! Rachel

It could be possible that the person registering David's death wasn't sure what year he was born - and so gave the wrong year

Potty

Potty Report 3 Feb 2009 14:37

Only birth I can find for a Lilian Melia between 1910 and 1916 is in 1911 born Stoke on Trent and she is on the 1911 census with and Emiie b1886 and Doris b1908, so not your Lilian.

Keep them coming on my behalf!!

Our background information is very vague sorry.

Other family members believe that James (father) and Anne/Annie (Mother), John, Mary and Thomas came to the UK from Ireland. In 1943 they lived in Reddish but we believe they may have lived/had close relations who lived in Hulme, Manchester

Order and rough year of births are as follows (sorry my information is very limited):-
John, 1903
Mary, 1905
Thomas, 1907
David, 1909
Lilian, 1912 Sorry I cannot provide date of deaths.

Is there any way of searching for the place of residence known, before I apply for David's birth certificate. Sorry am clutching at straws but this is the only definate information I know!!

Thanks so much for all your help Smurf! Rachel

Sorry... i keep asking questions!

Do you know when the others were born? even better... when they died?

MRJH

MRJH Report 3 Feb 2009 13:55

I found David's death... In 1983 the birth date was written on the index.... all it says on this one is ABOUT 1909!

I guess the information didn't actually know when he was born

Irene

Irene Report 3 Feb 2009 13:52

David Melia was born in January (on his tombstone it does say 1909-1983).

David had the following siblings John, Mary, Thomas and Lilian.

Think like you suggest Smurf is to apply for David's birth certificate (born in 1909) and hopefully the info will be correct i.e. fathers name James.

MRJH

MRJH Report 3 Feb 2009 13:49

Rachel has said that the father's name is James, not william

MRJH Report 3 Feb 2009 13:41

These are the only David Melia births

Births Sep 1876 (>99%)
MELIA David Alexander W. Derby 8b 488

Births Mar 1900 (>99%)
Melia David Liverpool 8b 126

Births Jun 1903 (>99%)
Melia David Rochdale 8e 58

Births Mar 1909 (>99%)
MELIA David Manchester 8d 275

A 3 year error isn't that much. one of my certificates has a woman's age at 9 years out!

I think the only way you're going to know if to buy the birth certificate.

The GRO has an option to enter the father's name on the birth order... if you put in James and the actual certificate doesn't have the father james.... they'll only charge you £4 and not send the certificate.

I see this is probably your direct line so if it is the right certificate, it'll still be nice to have!

If you look at the actual image for David Melia - 1913 its says "Bury" not "Bury St Edmunds"

You can order certs online from here:http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/

If you tick the box for having GRO ref and enter the vol and page number from the birth Smurf has found it will cost £7.

Maybe he lied about his age when he married. He was quite a bit older than his wife.

another possible birth

Dec 1913
DAVID MELIA
Mother's maiden name - BACKHOUSE
BURY St.e. 4a 987

Irene

Irene Report 3 Feb 2009 13:29

Having looked at the marriage certificate they have down that David Melia was aged 31 on 27/12/43. This would mean that David was born in 1912 and not 1909. Very odd, something doesn't add up here??? Margaret Gaunt was aged 20 years when married.

Date of Marriage: 27/12/1943
David Melia and Margaret Gaunt married in Stockport in witness of:
Frederick - what looks to be Joyce; and
Irene R/F_ _d_y

Both David and James' occupations was an 'Engineer'.
At the time of marriage James (father) was deceased.

Residence at time of Marriage: 163 Harcourt Street, Reddish (David)
166 Harcourt Street, Reddish (Margaret)

Thanks Smurf

With a name like Melia is probably been mistranscribed. I'll have a look for you.

Do you know of any siblings he may have had? after about 1911 the mother's maiden name in on the index. if there's a sibling born after that we might get lucky.

Can you post the info on the marriage certificate? The occupation of the father will help. and the witnesses often hold clues!

WoW thanks Smurf!
For some strange reason David Melia is not listed in the 1911 Census??
I will certainly obtain a copy of David's birth certificate, can you suggest the best way to go about this?
Many thanks

Irene

Irene Report 3 Feb 2009 13:04

Thanks for your quick response Frances. I have just received today David's marriage certificate which provided me with David's fathers name.

Now I have this I guess I can obtain David's birth certificate. Is there a site that you can obtain a copy from or would this request need to be done through local council at cost of £7.00?
Many thanks

Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar

his birth certificate will give you his mother's maiden name.

Have you tried out the 1911 census yet? He'll be on there

Hi there,
I would be really grateful if anyone could find out David Melia's mother's maiden name.

David Melia was born Jan 1909 in Manchester. His father was James Melia, I believe David's mother may have been called Ann/Annie. In order that I can locate more family members relating to David.

David was brought up at 166 Harcourt Street, Reddish, Stockport.

Many, many thanks Rachel
PS if you require further info please let me know as I am knew to this site!
Thanks again
