Has anyone any ideas? Been trying for weeks to go back one more generation.

William Smith born 1805 Milford Hampshire. He married a Jane Milledge b. 1806 Boldre Hampshire marriage 4 Sept 1826 Boldre. I have her parents James Milledge and Hannah Gaterille but cannot find my main line William's parents.

Been trying IGI for the last 3 days no joy but not absolutely sure what area Milford comes under. Tried hants.gov.uk archives & wildes.net/hampshire. Come to a full stop now. What else can I try?? Help someone.

If you google Milford Hampshire, the town has a very good webpage. It appears to be close to Lymington, so maybe that is where you need to look.

I think this must be him

25 May 1805-William SMITH s Richard & Elizabeth at Lymington

I have the Hampshire Bapt Index 1752-1841 and there are LOTS of William Smiths but this is the only one in the right area

also
Marriage-18 April 1791 at Milford
Richard SMITH
Elizabeth SANDERS

so maybe he spent a lot of time with his grandparents !

Richard and Elizabeth also baptised these children at Lymington
27 Oct 1793-Mary born 19 Aug
04 Oct 1795-James born 25 Sept
25 May 1800-Henry born 08 Feb
22 Jan 1804-Ann born 30 Jan 1803
03 Jun 1811-George born 14 Feb

I also have these Hampshire Indexes

Marriages 1754-1837
Buriels 1400-1837

If this is your family and you want more info let me know

Now we have the SMITH problem !

This is the only Richard SMITH baptised at Lymington
14 Apr 1764-Richard s John - saltern man (no mother given)

The "Salterns" are now salt marshes but are the old salt beds where the salt was extracted from sea water
They went out of use in the Victorian time
Some of the workers were transient,

There are so many SMITH baptisms but these are the ones where only the father-John-is named and no mother at Lymington
between 1752 and 1775

07 Oct 1753-Betty
27 Aug 1757-Henry
20 Sep 1760-Elizabeth
14 Apr 1764-Richard John saltern man
03 Dec 1769-Elizabeth
22 Oct 1775-John

18 Apr 1757-Margaret d Mr John of the New Inn
11 Sep 1759-Edward s Mr John of the New Inn

Marriages before 1754 I cannot help with

There are 2 baptisms for an Elizabeth SAUNDERS both at Sopley which is nr Christchurch-nothing at Milford or Lymington

20 Feb 1766-Elizabeth d Joseph & Elenor
02 Aug 1768-Elizabeth d William & Sarah

I found this buriel
05 Jul 1835-Elizabeth SMITH 69 at Lymington

Richard is in the 1841 census living with an Elizabeth Summers-could be his sister and her husband-I will check.

He does not seem to be in the 1851 census so possibly died between 1841-1851 !
