Reading names on Census Document

I found on the 1841 Census we looked at that there is another Henderson family listed directly under (Cottage 3).

Not sure if they are brothers either.

Tried the same 1851, 1861, 1871 and seems most of them "disappeared".

I have located son Alexander and his death record (Montrose,Forfar, Angus in 1886). This shows father as Robert Smith Henderson and mother as Janet Mitchell - both deceased). Also have Alex's marriage record in 1863, to Janet Sadler, verifying same parent names (both noted as alive ).

Nest step was to do a death search between 1863 and 1886 for both Janet Henderson (Mitchell) and Robert Henderson.

I did find one death for a Janet Henderson (Mitchell) in 1882 - Death Cert - 1882 HENDERSON JANET (MITCHELL) F aged 80 in ST CLEMENT DUNDEE CITY/ANGUS 282/03 0142.
This notes married to Robert Henderson (perhaps on the right track here) and he signed the record.

Narrowing the field a little I think ...... down side is that I cannot locate a death for Robert Henderson between 1882 and 1886).

Do you think I am on the right track???

The only thing I can think off is that Roberts age was listed incorrectly, but I can not find the family in 1851 census to see if a different age has been entered.

Hi Julie,
It's a bit mind boggling really.

I've just done a wide birth search for
Henderson 1825 to 1845 - no first names and both sexes.
Returned 131 births.

Went through each and every one and have verified the five children and having parents - Robert Henderson and Janet Mitchell. All children born between 1832 and 1845 as per my tree details.
This information coincides with the 1841 Census - but clearly has Roberts age as 25 and Janet as 35.

The marriage date 1829 is also verified and I've done even wider searches (date wise) and cannot work it out.

I'm stumped!!

Hi Eric,

Have you also considered that 9yr old Elizabeth was from a previous marriage,?
Robert would again have been a bit young to be her father.

If you have full access to ScotlandsPeople, I would check for a marriage between Robert & Janet about 1833-34 prior to Davids birth in 1835.
What do you think ? ?

Now to see if Lementer has some details elsewhere.

Very odd name.

Given her age based on the Census records, she must have been born under another name. Surely it is not possible for Robert to have fathered the child at age 13/14.

Mystery is half solved now (thanks agin ladies!!!)

Will do some more digging to see what comes up.

Enjoy!!

well done Julie - Leminber - who ever would have thought of that!!! so glad it's all solved - I've been here this morning having printed it off, peering at it with a big magnifying glass when all the time it had been solved. So pleased for you

GOT IT Ladies!!!

1841 HENDERSON LEMENTER F 12 LUNDIE /ANGUS 306/00 002/00 001 VIEW (PAID)

This is the only match in Lundie and it's the right document number also (plus it came us as "paid", so I've already looked at it!!)

Issue solved. It was the fact Linda came back with a name starting with L, so just did a blanket search with L in first name field.

THANKS AGAIN LADIES!!!

Hi Julie .... much appreciated - I agree with everything there (exception I guess is Leminber aged 12).
It is this one that is puzzling me (and Ann).

I looked on 1851 Census but nothing there. Wondering if I should just try looking for L Henderson??

Anthing is worth a go!

Thanks again for helping out!

Eric

Thanks again Ann of GG!!
It's the "puzzler" that I am interested in .... looks like it starts with T?

Frederic (Eric) Report 19 Jan 2009 02:56

Hello Julie,
I've sent a "soft copy" to Ann of GG via email.

It is available through Scotlandpeople website - Census 1841, Lundie name is Henderson and record number is 306/ 00 002/ 00 001.

Does that help??

Julcoe Report 19 Jan 2009 02:40

Eric, is this a census record that we can look at on-line ?

and therefore use our computers to magnify the document to enable us to read it more clearly .....? ?

Frederic (Eric) Report 19 Jan 2009 02:37

Hi all,
I am having some difficulty reading a first name on a Census Document.
I'm keen to determine this name as the age of the dependant (12) does not reflect the age of the father (25). The mother however is noted as being 35, so I suspect this is a child from a previous marriage or "out of wedlock".

Wondering if someone would be kind enough to help me out - I do have a copy of which I can email - please send me a PM and I will pass on my details.

Many thanks (in advance)!!
