Well, are you working backwards? Do you have the marriage cert of the daughter? With a name like Thomas Hughes and the location of his birth, Id say we are looking for welsh ancestry on the paternal side.

When you say where to you go from there, do you mean ancestry or descendants

When was the eldest child born to the guy in 1851? If you bought the daughters birth cert you would have her mothers maiden name and from there be able to look for the marriage cert.

Please read the Absolute Basics thread.

1851:

Thomas Hughes 31
Elizabeth Hughes 32
Carolin Hannah Hughes 6
Thomas Page Hughes 4
Amelia Ann Hughes 1

The eldest daughter's birth ref: (Handy they give the kids 2 names and put them in the census)

Births Jun 1845

HUGHES Caroline Hannah W Derby 20 991

1861:

Name Age
Thomas Hughes 41
Elizabeth Hughes 42
Caroline H Hughes 16
Thomas C Hughes 14
Amelia A Hughes 11
Sarah J Hughes 8
Elizabeth M Hughes 5
Richard W Hughes 2
Martin Schully 67
Mathew Stone 24

There are a couple of possibles for Elizabeth M on freebmd (where you look up births, marriages and death refs)

Have a look yourself and see which you think likely or just buy Caroline Hannahs for the mothers maiden name. £7 from GRO online. Once you have mums maiden name you will be confident in looking further back on the line for their marriage and earlier details. There are a lot of Thomas Hughes marriages to Elizabeths on freebmd, so you do need her maiden name to be accurate and find the marriage for them. I was interested in the son, Thomas having the middle name Page, but sadly no sign of an Elizabeth Page marrying a Tom Hughes

On the 1851 Census / Liverpool Toxteth we read of Thomas Hughes
31 years a Warehouse Porter born in Oswestry Shropshire and his wife Elisabeth 32 years of Rednal? Shropshire. Their daughter Elisabeth DOB 1854 married John Dingwall in Liverpool on
23.03. 1884. But where could I go from here?? Any help would be much appreciated say Sandra / Germany
