Sorry, could I clarify:

You are looking for your great grandparents.

What are their names and when/where were they born?

If you have found their birth references on freebmd or the complete index you dont need their parents names to order the certificate from GRO online for £7.

And ditto for gran -- just go to

http://www.freebmd.org.uk

click on the red Search

and search for

births
surname Hillier
mother's surname Holvey

and bingo, there it is -- as Ericthered says, that's all you need to order the birth cert and get the parents' names.

But since you knew the mothers' birth surnames already, do you know their full names? If so ... spit 'em out. ;)

Editing to fix a typo - and i was going to say, do the same searches, with the two surnames, for marriages, but I see it's been done and dusted ...

Just make sure you check the box where they ask if you have the GRO refs...............that is all you need......you can omit any reference to parents' names..................

Heather

Heather Report 14 Jan 2009 23:27

When you go to the GRO and have entered the year and type of event there is another box which asks if you have the GRO reference. Tick that box and then all you need are the details that have been giving here to order the certs.

Blimey, just looked back and ALL this stuff given in 10 minutes - what a team :)

EvieBeavie

EvieBeavie Report 14 Jan 2009 23:27

GRO doesn't want to know their parents' names, you see -- it's just a piece of info you can include *if* you want it checked (for instance, if your person is John Smith, and you only want the cert if the father is Horatio).

It's not a mandatory piece of info. Just go ahead and order.

But you really can find the parents' names w/o the birth certificates, for now.

Just search for

marriages
surname Hillier
spouse's surname Holvey

... but I'm sure somebody will hand that to you here too ...

Oh no, that's right somebody did. Well, for future ref (the dual surname search works right back to 1837, but before 1911 only the certificate will confirm the match), that's how it's done.

Julie Ann Report 14 Jan 2009 23:37

thanks for that i will try to order the certificates again and i was trying the match up as i did that with my fathers side of the family, its just maddening all i knew about my father was his name and date of birth and in three month ive got back to 1761 but my grandparents on my mums side have been an absolute nightmare, thanks again you have all been fantastic as usual, thanks again ; ))
