As I said having a Brain day!!!! Thanks Evie for all your help.
I have applied for Daphne's birth Cert to see if that helps my search.
Can't seem to find a marriage or other children or a death. So hope the birth cert will help me.

Any Ideas?

Thanks for the PM Sandra -- and you're welcome, from everyone of me. ;)

(Or did somebody else reply by PM? If so, tell them to put their stuff in the thread!)

There are two people at GR who have a Lillian Lester born 1909 in Tendring in their trees. They could be related to Lena Gertrude Lester born 1890 in Tendring, who I would guess was your Daphne's mother.

Just a note; you say:

My Auntie Patricia Frances was born 5/5/1943 in Manningtree Essex registered 17th April 1943 in Braintree essex.
Patricia was adopted by my Grandad on the 21 march 1943.

5/5/1943 = May 5, 1943 -- so the birth couldn't have been registered April 17, 1943, and she couldn't have been adopted March 21, 1943.

You can edit your post to fix those dates, at least a couple of which seem to be off. ;)

This looks like her birth:

Births Jun 1925
Smith Daphne L Lester Tendring 4a 1359

Searched at

http://www.freebmd.org.uk

for Daphne Smith born 1925-1926 -- that Daphne L Smith would have been almost 18 at the time of your aunt's birth.

The record shows that the mother's surname was Lester.

If you search at FreeBMD for the marriage of a Smith and a Lester, say 1915-1925, there is one male Smith married to a Lester in Tendring in 1917 who might be a good bet for the parents -- George R Smith and Lena G Lester.

You might have a hard time picking out George's birth at FreeBMD, but Lena's might be easier.

You can search trees here at GR for any family members you can identify, and you might strike it lucky and find someone who has them in their tree.

Also, search at FreeBMD for other Smith-Lester births in Tendring. There aren't any at present, but FreeBMD is still transcribing the GRO births index for that period, and there could be births after Daphne that will show up before long in the database.

Eventually you will be able to search the database for a marriage for Daphne -- but the name Daphne L Smith was not unique, so you might have to follow some false trails in the process.

At present, you can download the untranscribed images of the GRO marriages index, e.g. at Ancestry, and read the relevant page (where the name Daphne L Smith would appear if there are marriages in that name) for each quarter of each year when she might haev married, after 1943. That is tedious and time-consuming, but easily enough done by taking out a free trial subscription at Ancestry. If you do that, this is the direct link to the search page:

http://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/db.aspx?dbid=8913

Another possibility is to get Daphne's birth certificate so you have her exact date of birth. The 1984-2005 deaths index is searchable at Ancestry by given name and date of birth alone, so this could allow you to find Daphne's death / rule out a death during that period.

Good luck! And if you have any other questions/info, just shout.

This posting is a bit of a long shot but any help would be lovely.
I am trying to help my adopted auntie who now lives in Australia find some info about her birth mother. The details I have are as follows
Mothers Name Daphne Lester Smith
My Auntie Patricia Frances was born 21/03/1943 in Manningtree Essex registered 5th May 1943 in Braintree essex.
Daphne is listed as being a shop assistant stationary trade of Jubilee Terrace Colchester Road Manningtree and was 17 years old, there is no father listed
Patricia was adopted by my Grandad on the 07/09 1943.
We have her birth Cert and adoption cert but know no more.
She would love to know if her birth mother is still alive and if she has any siblings extended family.

Any help would be greatly appreciated or any info of where to search next.
