LILY POOLE (Blackburn 1890) emigrated to America in the early 1900s. All I know is that she 'upped and left' with her children and emigrated. When my mother was 3 years old she went out to America with her mother (Ellen Moxham nee Poole) and her grandmother (Esther Poole nee Owen). This would have been in 1924. It was to visit "Aunt Lily". I have no-one left to ask about my mum's family so I have very scant info. I don't know who Lily married. I don't even know where she went to in America. And I don't know the names of her children. Hence, this is a VERY long shot! Any help or advice gratefully received.

EDIT, apparently this is not her, she appeared to arrive with a family of Pooles. There is a descrepancy between FMP and Ellis Island, FMP says departed on the Majestic on 28th Sept 1904, Ellis Island on 21 Sept 1904 on the Baltic!!

Ellis Island has the arrival of your mother and her family when they went to visit, arriving Dec. 9, 1924.

(Doesn't make sense if she's Joseph's sister, how could she be Esther's daughter?)

Looks like your mother went twice to America, once when she was 3 and again when she was 5. The second time sailing to Boston so not on the Ellis Island site.

Just realized you said "she upped and left with her children". So she was married and wouldn't have travelled under the name Poole?

Aha! Looks like you got it, Mary.
A Lily Crompton, 31, arrived at Ellis Island 10 April 1920 with daughter Helen, 10. She lists friend, Mrs Poole, 189 High Audley St., Blackburn, England. She's heading for Pawtuckett, Rhode Island. She's going to join her sister, Mrs. Hutton, 5 Carpenter St., Pawtuckett. Something else is written there but can't make it out, could it be wife of her stepson?
Hopefully someone with access to American censuses can look them up?

I have just spoken with my sister and asked her if she knew the name of the man Lily married. I had a few possibles from the threads you kind folks had provided and there was a certain William Hull whose name came up. My sister remembered it was "Hull" and he was a coalman. So, now we know that Lily Poole became Lily Hull. We know one of her children was called Esther (a strong family name). My sister remembers two grandchildren of hers were called Bruce and George(ie)..male. We're getting there! Thankyou so much everyone who is helping. It's much appreciated,

Hi there! It's me being an idiot! It was Lily Poole's niece, Leah, who married William Hull!! You were right. I apologise for being confusing...and confused! There are so many Esthers in the family and several Ernests. No excuse. I just got confused. It HAD to be the same Lily Compton. However, it is still correct that she had a daughter, Esther. I'm not sure of the others, nor of how many there were. And she still had grandchildren called Bruce and George. I remember my mum saying that she had stayed in Rhode Island so that tallies, too. You were on the right track and I unwittingly nearly derailed you!

OK, Julia, we're back on the rails now. Curious though that Lily Crompton just had daughter Helen with her. Also the fact that she described Esther Poole as friend and not mother.
We really need someone with access to American records.
Where's our good friend "Lisa from California"?

Joseph Moxham could not have been visiting his sister as he had no sister called Jane. So, what relation was Jane to James Day? Esther Poole only had Lily out there who must have been Compton. Had Lily remarried or was she "living with" this James Day? Was Jane James's sister, or mother? If she was his wife, that's a real puzzle if James Day is Esther's son-in-law! He could only be her son-in-law if married to Lily Compton nee Poole. Now I'm getting myself confused again. Please can you help to unravel this mystery?

Okay, so we are on the right track then lol

Here is the marriage ref: if you want to get it to confirm that it is the correct Lily:

There are a couple of Thomas Crompton deaths in 1912 which might explain why I can't find any more children and why no husband with Lily and daughter Helen arriving in US?

I wonder too if Helen should in fact be Ellen? I can't find any births for Helen Crompton but I can find some for Ellen......the following one being the most likely:

As you seem certain that Lily had at least one other daugher called Esther then perhaps she married James Day in the US? This would make sense of "Esther senior visiting her son in law James Day" at least.

If Jane Day is James's sister then Joseph Moxham would be Jane's brother in law by marriage......I think :-)

As you suggest, it may be a good idea to order the marriage certificate to confirm the Lily Poole/Compton marriage for sure. Although it looks pretty 'safe'. What my sister remembers is that my mum's "cousin Essie" used to send beautiful clothes over for her. The problem is that, with no-one left to ask, memories can get confused over time. Maybe Helen's nickname was "Ellie". Difficult to know. Yes, we need someone based in America who has access to relevant records.

It looks quite possible that the first death on the list that Teresa has found for you - if the date of birth matches of course - is your Lily. Wife of James Day not sister though!

What I was suggesting about the name Helen/Ellen was this.......the name Ellen said in a broad Lancs accent to a US immigration clerk could very easily be mistaken for Helen.
