Missing after 1891 census

My great grandfather had many sibling and I am gradually tracing each one. I have come across a brother of his who simply vanishes. His name was William Thompson who was born in Motcombe, Dorset in 1879. I have him on the 1891 census as living at Elm Top, Motcombe being 12 yrs old and a scholar and there it ends, I have searched high and low but without any suceess, can someone help please and suggest where I could look.

Is it possible that he joined the army? A lot of men were in Africa in the Boer War when the 1901 census was taken (my grandfather among them).

Yes Snowflake that's the family. Eliza is another member of the family who seems to do nothing. The James mentioned is also called Garfiled James. My late grandmother left a "birthday book" great idea, lots of names and dates of birth but no years mentioned. Several other members of the family are mentioned in "the birthday book" and I have used this to find other members.
