I can see William Witts aged 8 when I look at the image - living at 2 Bath Court, Shoreditch on the 1841 census with all the family that you listed previously in yr post yesterday 10:32 - right underneath Joseph aged 3.

Lovely story Ray, but you say that Amelia was looking after one of the Witts boys in 1841, does that mean that the 1841 census above is not the correct one as there is no Witt shown living with the family?

Elizabeth Witts nee Godding had two surviving children - John 1831 and William 1832. At the time of her death giving birth to her 3rd in 1837 her spouse John had also died leaving the two young Witts boys orphaned.
They were both found on the 1841 census - one had been taken in by her sister Amelia now Clements and the other was being cared for by Mary Clements (a daughter of William and Amelia) who was only 19 herself and working as a "live in servant".
William and Amelia (among others) also had a son named WIlliam Goding Clements who married a Mary Dumbleton. Over the next few years, both of the Witts lads had also married - in each case to a sister of Mary Dumbleton - so both the orphaned boys became brothers in law to the son of the family that took them in.
I thought this a sad but nice story I'd like to share.

Hello, had to go out and just got back!
I found the 1841 census on ancestry and the christening record for 1803 on familysearch.org. This Amelia had a possible sister, Mary Ann:- MARY ANN GODIN - International Genealogical Index Gender: Female Christening: 31 MAY 1812 West Lavington, Wiltshire, England (Extracted birth or christening record for the locality listed in the record) possibly the witness at her marriage?
and there is also a possible sister Elizabeth:- ELIZABETH GODIN - International Genealogical Index Gender: Female Christening: 03 APR 1808 West Lavington, Wiltshire, England (Extracted birth or christening record for the locality listed in the record.)
If you check this out there are lots of other records for possible brothers and sisters, but most are submitted records so to be taken with caution especially as some do contradict each other.
This may all, of course, be a red herring but thought it worth mentioning!

Many thanks for all the useful replies.
As Ericthered said - William Goding Clements b 1853 is their grandson - his father was also William Goding Clements b 1830. I also wasnt aware about the age rounding down - many thanks for that information.
Catherine - may I ask where you found him aged 44 in 1841 - if this is correct then I think you have been able to confirm a likely candidate - born 10th Jan 1797 in Shoreditch - although Clement (no "s") - but we all know what the transcription was like in those days - I think they made it up as they went along. I.ve been condsidering this chappy for some time - but the 1841 census gave both William and Amelia as both aged 40 - although Williams age looks more like 4U - I tried to make it into a 4 but couldn't. Shame I cant post an image - we could have a vote.
Addendum: I've checked the image on two other sites - on one its been interpreted as 40 and on the other as 44. I still see it as 40 - but in view of what eric said it probably irrelivant.
Its also interesting about the Amelia Godding from Wiltshire. I've been able to confirm she had a sister called Elizabeth but unfortunately she was dead before the 1841 census - giving birth to her third child - who also died.

Only Amelia Goding I could find born between 1797 and 1907 anywhere in England is the following:-
AMELIA GODIN - International Genealogical Index Gender: Female Christening: 09 OCT 1803 West Lavington, Wiltshire, England Father: WILLIAM GODIN Mother: JANE
Extracted birth or christening record for the locality listed in the record. But could it be the one you are looking for?
1851 census shows Elizabeth Godding, visitor as being born in Wiltshire, so could be worth looking into. Pity I can't find parents on 1851 census to confirm, but it looks as though they must have died some time between 1841 and 1851. Can you confirm this?

1841 census didn't give place of birth so if you find them in 1851 census it should give you a better idea of where they were actually born!

Desperately seeking information about William Clements and Amelia Martha Goding.
On the 1841 census shown as living in Shoreditch and the age given for both is 40 - has anyone any idea how accurate they were at recording ages?
I have their wedding in 1821 and their children but can find no records of either of their births or parents. Witness at wedding was Mary Ann Goddin and Amelias name is given as Godding with the "g" crossed out.
However, there were two generations after where eldest sons were given the middle christian name of Goding.
Any help appreciated.
