The Nazareth House in London is the main Nazareth House for all of the Nazareth houses that are still in existance. As far as information that the birth mother would have given would have been what ever she wanted as the Sisters of Nazareth didnt always get the truth from them. Im sure that the Sister in charge in London would be happy to help

What information do you think would be available at Nazereth Nouse, what info would her birth mother have to give when she gave her baby up. Thanks T

Teresa Report 2 Dec 2008 11:43

I have some news, turns out my mother was actually taken from Nazereth House by another family with another boy. Then a neighbour woman who wanted another girl said that she would love the baby, took her home to her husband in a cardboard box ! and they kept her instead, we presume nothing was official as they didn;t even get her birthcert till she was seven. its a bit mad but things must have been so different in the war. I live in Donegal, Southern Ireland, but near to Northern Ireland, so if I knew where to go I could go. Teresa

The fact that they put farmers daughter might imply that she was a minor when she gave birth?

As Hayley said, Mullan is her maiden name so you might be best looking for a marriage later on after your mothers birth.

Am I right in assuming that there are no fathers details listed?

I would start by making enquiries about Keenaghan Road. If it's a family farm it could well be that it is still family owned.

What area are you from, are you actually in Ireland as this would make your reasearch a lot easier. Most irish records arn't available online but there are still things you can do.

As Ann suggests maybe nazereth house might even have contact details for the family even if they are out of date it will be a start. xx

Just wondering if you have contacted the nazareth house that dealt with her adoption they may have kept records of the adoptions

You could try above as they were farmers & they could have been there for years,

Where do I go now, I know my mother's birthday 31/08/1940, her mother's name Martha Mullan, her address Keenaghan rd, Cookstown, Northern ireland, I think and her mother's mother was a farmer. What should I look for next? Thanks T

Teresa Report 1 Dec 2008 20:02

Teresa, I am by no means an expert, but hoping to 'carry forward' all the help people on here have given me.

I would suggest that your natural grandmother was Martha Mullen, Mullen being her maiden name, she was the daughter of a farmer.

Have you tried googling the word Keenaghan? I wonder whether it could be the name of a place in Ireland or even a reference to the father.

As you are new to this, just to give you an idea of what is "normally" in that box .... one of mine says Margaret Jane Walsh formerly Price. This means her maiden name was Price.

Is there any father named in that section? Also, don't forget to pay attention to the box which goves you details of the informant (ie person who registered the birth). In a few of mine, the maternal grandmother is the informant which gives you further line to research.

Really the 1st thing you need to do is get the birth certificate. Mullan could be Marthas maiden name or a married name...or maybe even a name given to her by the hospital or home. The birth certificate is the best resource to start from. You never know what clues it may throw up...It may even be that Mullan was the fathers name and wasn't actually Marthas name at all. At this stage its all a bit of speculation...you needn't even tell your mother your ordering it if you think it might upset her some how. xx

Teresa Report 30 Nov 2008 22:49

Mullan is my mother's mother maiden name, I do not have my mother's birthcert as I do not want to get my mother's hopes up regarding finding her mother until I get a bit further. thanks for replying as I am new to the site and I'm just sitting here staring at the screeen wondering what to do next.
