Many thanks for your hellp. Of course it is Caters, the butchers I need, so will take a look.

As you say, they might have gone to the Costa del Sol - more likely Yarmouth!!!

Many thanks for your help

I think what you want is
Census > UK Census Collection > 1881 England Census > Essex > Colchester St Giles > District 9

The Enumerators description reads: ... North side of Magdalen Street between Caters, butcher, and ...
I didn't go thru the images, but your family don't appear to be recorded and transcribed as one would wish. Of course, they might have taken that weekend off to go to the Costa del Sol.

Yes, you have the right family. Eliza died in 1889
Its annoying when you cannot find a family on a census, but at least if I have tried people on GR, I am not a complete idiot!!
Many thanks

Sorry have tried and no luck on Ancestry.
They look to me to be missed off, noticed poss death for Eliza in 1889 still in Colchester and 1891 William still there. Most unusual would have expected them and Eliza Kate to be there on the 1881??

Sylvia

Yes, that is the family.

Are you meant to be able to put the address in Ancestry on the 1881 census. I have tried it, but it does not accept my address?

Many thanks for your help

I am looking for a William Cater and his wife Eliza Cater.
William should be 62, and a butcher. He was born in Colchester, Essex and was at Magdalen Street, Colchester in 1871 and 1891.

Eliza should be 56 and born Elmstead, Essex.

I have seen a William and Elizabeth Cater in Clerkenwell area, ages one year out, but births not in the right place.

They have obviously been mistranscribed or missed from the Census. I have tried a few variations, but possibly someone can help me.

Many thanks
Jo
