Hacks in Birmingham and India?

Anthony Report 22 Nov 2008 16:44

I am trying to unravel the same as this person who posted three years ago, any help would be appreciated, thanks:

I am new to family history (and also fairly new to e-mails) and would be grateful of any help in the following:
HENRY HACK (born Leicestershire) married FRANCES HOLLAND 11-09-1849 Kings Norton B'ham. Frances was born in Walsall. Her parents were Charles Holland (victualler? of 'The Goats Head Pub - 30 Newhall St. in 1850 and Spur Maker) and Jane.
Henry and Frances had 2 children(?) William and Charles, who were living with their grandmother (Jane) in the 1851 and 1861 census. Henry Hack and Frances were grocers in Upper Rushall St. By 1877 when Charles married, Henry's occupation was 'Soldier'. Frances died in 1858. From 1881 census found a Henry Hack (born Leicester) married to Priscilla Maria (born Madras, Chinopoly) about the right age. I want to find out if this Henry is my Henry, and wondered if he had joined the army, gone to India and remarried (3 children in India). Moved back to West Brom.by 1881 (another child born here). What records could I look at to see if and when Henry 'joined up'?
Hope this isn't too long winded and that someone may be able to help,
Mel

This is a bit of a surprise. Many thanks for all your replies. I am sorry but I was unaware anyone had replied until now - I have just come across this page by chance! Thank you all for the information. I have realised, however, that my posting wasn't worded very well as my real question is whether this Henry Hack is the same as the one I am related to. I seem to have hit a stumbling block as there were 2 Henry Hacks born in Leicestershire around this time and I wasn't sure how to find out which was my Henry Hack. If anyone can help again, I would be very grateful. I just became curious again as I am going to India for the first time in a couple of weeks and remembered this possible connection. I will provide more information when possible. Thanks again to all, Anthony Hack.

Hello Anthony, and welcome back after all this time!

Genes, unlike some other sites, don't notify you when there have been responses on a thread. It's left up to us to keep checking.

For future reference, if you look down the left hand side of any of these message boards you'll see a link "My Threads". If you click on that you can quickly get back to any threads (like this one) that you have started or posted on.

There is also a facility to tick some as a watched thread with an option to receive emails when someone posts, but it often doesn't work! So, best to keep checking back.
