Hi Amanda

Young John and Mary are either living with relatives or have died young, sadly a common occurence in those days..

A search of SP brings up the following possibilities:

Mary Graham, died 1889, age 9, Greenock New or Middle.

Mary Jane Graham, died 1881, age 2, Gourock.

I would suggest that the second one is the more likely, and that's the one I'd go for first.

Re John, there's only one possibility for early death:

John Graham, age 7, 1884, Lochwinnoch, Renfrew.

We have no reason so far to believe that the family were in Lochwinnoch, so may or may not be your John.

So far I can find no trace of an outstanding candidate for John on the 1891 or 1901 censuses.

Regards

Ellen

Sorry everyone but I have another queerie?

In 1881 there was a John age 5 and Mary age 1 but on the 1891 lookup there's no sign of John or Mary, they would only have been age 15 and 11 then, what could've happened to them?

I'd be grateful for a bit of help again please.

Thank You,

Amanda

On the ScotlandsPeople site search for the entry you want, eg marraige of William Campbell and Agnes Campbell, using the information I have given you re the date and place.

(First you will need to purchase some credits! the site guides you through how to do this)

When the correct entry comes up on the index, click on View. the site will tell you how many credits it will cost and ask if you are sure.

Once you have viewed the correct index entry, it will have a button next to it which you can click on to purchase and view the actual certificate. You can then save the image to your computer and/or print off ac copy.

Don't worry if you don't know how to save it to your computer, as any that you have paid to view will remain available to you at all times on your Scotlandspeople account.

Have a read of the instructions on the site - they do explain everything quite comprehensively and in plain english.

Good luck, and just shout if you need more help.

Cheers

OK - its the right guy though, as I have the marraige cert here.

According to the IGI, William Campbell and Agnes Campbell were married 18 Mar 1868 @ Middle or New Parish, Greenock.

You can now download this cert from SP and get another generation back as it will have both sets of parents.

Re Henrietta's family. I reckon the 1901 above found by Glitter Baby is her.

In 1891 the family are at 71 Vennel, Greenock, and father Thomas is still alive:

Thomas Graham, 45, Cab Driver, born Ireland
Mary, 43, wife, born Ireland
Elizabeth 17, daughter, Domestic Servant, born Glasgow
Thomasina, 13, daughter, Domsetic Servant, born Gourock (Renfrewshire)
Hentrietta, 5, daughter, born Greenock.

1881 the family are at Inverkip, Gourock:

Thomas, 35, Tramway Driver (at that time trams were pulled by horses, so fits with his later stableman occupation on Hentrietta's marraige cert), born Ireland
Mary 33, wife, born Ireland
Elizabeth, 6, daughter born Glasgow
John, 5 son, born Glasgow
Thomasina, 3, daughter, born Gourock
Mary, 1, daughter, born Gourock.

According to IGI, thankfully Thomas and Mary were married in Scotland - 13 May 1874 @ Bridgeton, Glasgow. As before you can now download this cert from SP and get back another generation with their parents names - although life will be a bit harder finding more about these two as they were both born in Ireland!

Hope this all helps.

Cheers

Hello Ellen,
Johns occupation could be something driller but not sure if it's Iron.

Hi again Amanda

In this instance, it just means that 1958 is within the 50year cut off and for data protection it is not permissable to show the mother's maiden name on the index, or for that matter to view the cert online.

Re John Campbell's occupation, can you have another look - does it actually say Iron Driller?

I ask because curiosity got the better of me as always, and I downloaded the marraige cert of John and Henriettia from SP.

They were married on 29 Dec 1905 @ The Manse, Ratho Street, Greenock.

John was 26 and a batchelor, Iron Driller. He was then living at 5 Cowgate Street, Greenock. Father, William Campbell, Iron Driller, Mother Agnes Campbell, ms Campbell.

Henrietta was 20, spinster, Preserve Worker (Jam Maker??), and also living at 5 Cowgate Street, Greenock. Father Thomas Graham, Stableman, deceased, Mother, Mary Jane Graham ms Kirkwood.

Witnesses were John Humphrey and Ellen Haughie.

From this information, a 1901 census look up gives us the most likely Campbell family at 5 Arthur Street, Greenock East.

William Campbell, 64, Shipyard Driller
Agness, 50 wife
John, 23, Shipyard Driller, son
Lizzie 20, daughter
Lizzie, 7 months, grandaughter
Mary Morgan, 5, grandaughter

1891 same family are at 12 Arthur Street, Greenock:

William Campbell, 51, Ship Yard Labourer
Agnes, 43, wife
Mary, 16, daughter
John, 14, son
Elizabeth, 10, daughter

Will have a look for Henrietta's side now.

If you want the downloaded cert of the marraige pm me your e mail address and I'll send it to you.

Cheers

I looked on SP for Agnes Campbell/Letson's death,
I found one for 1958 but on the bit that says "Mothers Surname" it says "Not Permissable".
Can anyone tell me what this means please.

Sandra

Sandra Report 18 Nov 2008 12:35

Ellen
It looks like" Horse Driver" for John's occupation?

Ellen

Ellen Report 18 Nov 2008 12:28

Hi Amanda

According to Scotlands People, John and Henrietta married in 1905 in Greenock East, so you're unlikely to find them both together in 1901 census. (GROS Ref 564/01 0002) You can view the marraige cert on SP for 5 credits (+ 1 credit to search) and you will get both sets of parents.

The above Henrietta found by Glitter Baby looks likely.

Do you have John Campbell's occupation from Agnes' marraige cert to help us narrow it down - there are loads of John Campbells in Greenock!
