Find Ancestors

I wonder if I could be cheeky and ask for some further assistance. I am trying to find Timothy Siddall b ca. 1869 - son of Timothy Siddall & Hannah Bromley.
I have tried freebmd but cant find a birth record and dont have access to census information.
Any information from 1871 onwards would be a great help.

Thanks Andy & Jean thats just what I was looking for - still cant find his birth but this is something.
Could I impose on your generosity and ask if you could check the 1901 census for him too?

His birth might well not have been registered


....... although registration was brought in in 1837, and it was supposedly compulsory, it was upto the Registrar to find out about babies and go to register them!

This changed in 1875, when it became the responsibility of the mother to register the baby. Even then, a few manage to slip through and not be registered.

Jean, the census posting for 1901 relates to his father - also Timothy, very confusing!

Even more confusing - a Sarah is listed as 6 yrs old in 1871 but in 1901 is only 9!!!!! Work that one out!!
Parents - Timothy & Hannah didnt marry unti 1868 so dont know if the Sarah in 1871 is a child or another relative.

Sylvia - thanks for that. I thought all registrations were compulsory and responsibility of the parents after 1837.

Yes registration was compulsory from July 1 1837.


it was a strange "quirk" if you like

............. the onus for reporting marriages and deaths was on the priest to report, and those were reported almost immediately.

But for some reason the onus for registering births was put on the Registrar, who often didn't have an office, or may not have lived in the community.


That was not corrected until sometime about half way through 1875.
