Very sad Margaret. Then found love again with my grandmother, wedding all planned, then died 2 weeks before his son was born.

I cannot thank you enough for this information Margaret, it fills such a big gap.

AND you too Rose - thank you.

Rose, I'm wondering whether Christina's journey here had anything to do with the baby? I have been told that his Canadian grandfather asked to adopt him.
Very interesting. Thanks

Sue, this site allows you to order the complete service file of WW1 soldiers. I have never done so myself but others tell me that the price isn't too exorbitant. I understand they charge per page.

Such a sad story! It certainly looks as if Christina went over there hoping to bring the baby back with her.

Prairie Farm Addresses.
The 1906 census shows the Fisher family living at S24 T15 R32 MW1 (S=Section T=Township R=range M=Meridian), so where is this? Each section is a mile square; they're grouped into 6 x 6 blocks. The Township # says how many blocks N of the US border, so T15 is 84-90 miles N of the border. (Well actually, a couple of miles further N by now, since this calculation excludes road allowances.) The Range says how many blocks E or W of the meridian one counts - West here (note the W1). Actually, the first, or prime meridian, is the only one you can measure E of. All the rest are measured W of the last meridian. All meridians run exactly South to North. All E-W measurements are done from a meridian. As a practical matter, E-W measurements are only made on every fourth township boundary, and lines drawn true N-S into the two townships on each side. Anyway, R32 M1W is abt 180 m W of the prime meridian (which is abt 20m W of Winnipeg), and this puts it just inside the SK border (the southern MB-SK border is between R29 and R30). Most of the meridians occur every 4 deg of longitude (the first is a bit offset to the E). As a technical aside, the complication in calcualting E-W locations is due to the earth's curvature. Running a pair of lines due north that are 6 m apart at the US border lines, by the time they reach the northern boundary of these province, they're only 4 m apart, so a political decision was made that this was too big a disparity, and some correction must be made to make sections more uniform.)
Finally, each 6 x 6 block was numbered into sections in the same way.

31 32 33 34 35 36
30 29 28 27 26 25
19 20 21 22 23 24
18 17 16 15 14 13
~7 ~8 ~9 10 11 12
~6 ~5 ~4 ~3 ~2 ~1

A typical homestead grant was a quarter section, although this might be increased to a half section in less desirable areas.
Basically, one filed a homestead claim for $10, and were required to clear and plant 10% of claim per year for 3 years, and build a house to qualify for a grant of the land (prices and conditions did vary a bit). One could also purchase a claim (and the railroads and Hudson's Bay Co had large blocks for sale. Also the local school board was given 2 sections of every block, which they mostly sold or rented to raise money for schools).

If you go to http://maps.google.com/ and search for Moosomin, then take provincial hwy 8 N for 2.5 m, and turn west down the driveway, you can see there's still a farm on section 13 - S 25 looks like it just has a barn now, but the NE quarter was covered by cloud.

&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&

If you look at the actual page image for 1906, you'll see another T Fisher family at S13 T15 R32 M1W - looks like might be a brother to me. The TF family all had pob=Ont - the JF family only had JF with pob=Ont - wife SCT (immig 1882), and kids all Canada - SK only became province in 1905, before that it was NWT, Canada. It looks like JF is much more establihed - bigger set of livestock. Incidentally, the first time you look at a MrSid image, you're best to go thru the National Archives site and turn off your pop-up blocker and collect the plug-in viewer - it lets you reset the frame size (to 1200 x 800) and move the image with a hand.
