Find Ancestors

Hi everyone could anybody tell me where i could find out about James Dixon's regiment.

I have just received my great nan's birth cert Louisa Dixon born 11th July 1886.Carlisle

The problem i have is where to look for info on James Dixon, i have found out today that he married Grace Worrall my gr gr grandmother in dec 1884 in Carlilse but here is where i hit problems because the next census is 1891 and Grace married a George Wheelan in 1890 so he must of died whilst in the army but all it says on my great nan Louisa's cert is James Dixon Private in 55th Regiment, any body got any ideas for his army records i would be very grateful.

perhaps someone on here has an idea what the 55th Regiment was or is - if you find that out you could then approach the Army to get some details I suppose

Would this age 29 seem about right?

Can't help with army records I'm afraid

you could also check on the military website that lists casualties from WW1 because if he died in service it would have been WW1 presumably

The 55th Regiment of Foot was a British Army infantry regiment which existed from 1755 to 1881. After 1782 it had a county designation added, becoming known as the 55th (Westmorland) Regiment of Foot. or simply the Westmorland Regiment. The 55th ceased to exist as a separate regiment when it was amalgamated into The Border Regiment in 1881 as part of widespread army reforms.

The regiment was raised in Stirling, Scotland in 1755. George Perry, Esqr. was appointed Colonel, his commission being dated 25 December 1755. Originally ranked as the 57th Regiment of Foot, the regiment was re-ranked as the 55th in 1757 following the disbandment of the 50th and 51st Regiments.

Thanks for your reply i have been googling for hours now and still can not find anything not been having much look with my ancestors it difficult because they married after the 1881 census and he had died by 1891, i have found the marriage details so i will send off for them least i will know his father's name then and maybe go from there,

Paula, what did you think of the death in 1888? - when you get his marriage certificate you can check his age against the death.

On 1 July 1881, as part of the Childers Reforms which removed the numbering of Regiments, the 55th (Westmorland) Regiment of Foot united with the 34th (Cumberland) Regiment of Foot to form The Border Regiment of which the former 55th formed the 2nd battalion.

Through the process of amalgamation and restructuring of the Army, the lineage of the 55th Foot now rests with the 3rd Battalion of the Duke of Lancaster's Regiment (King's Lancashire and Border). The 18th century colours of the 55th are laid up at Kendal Parish Church.

So it is now the 3rd Battalion of the Duke of Lancaster;s Regiment - google for them, they will have a website for sure and see if you can get some information from them

Hi Everyone

Sorry cant type that fast my great great nan Grace was born c of 1865 so i presume James may be about the same give or take a few years so i dont think this is his death,

I have been in touch by phone and email to the Border Regiment regarding another ancestor which was a good few months ago it does make sense about Border Regiment as they were at the Castle in Carlilse
