Scottish registrations are much more informative than English ones, and for this time period cost abt a pound apiece. You first step is to get hold of James + Isabella's marr rego from:
http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/
This will give their parents, with MSs (maiden surnames). Once one can find them on a census with their parents, there's other things one can do (the last census released is 1901). You have to buy 6 GBP worth of credits, but you ought to be able to also get your dad's birth and a couple of grandparents' births for that.

Folk here on GR can help with the censuses (although you'll probably want to buy them too, in the end).
