Thank you all for your replies.
I'm now waiting for his date of birth and parents'names from the binding record. I have a contact on the docklands ancestors site who might be able to help. Once I have this I can go back further.

Also try the wonderful dockland ancestors site I think its unlikely you would be lucky enough to find someone who had heard of him on this board :) You need to follow him backwards through solid facts you have. Read the tips for newbies thread. Ill bump it up for you.

I have just found out that my grandfather was a Lighterman, who started his apprenticeship in 1891. Has anybody heard of William John Carr born in approx 1877?
