Susannah Newby (nee Williamson) between 1820 and 1850 in Yorkshire (Doncaster I believe).

Many thanks

How sure are you that she died between these dates?

Potty Report 25 Oct 2008 17:20

Death registration did not start until 1837 - before that you will only find burial information. You can look the 1837 onwards deaths for free on this site:

Hi

Ive looked on BMD but no luck.

I am actualy checking some information that someone else have me and I have doubts that its rights.

I know she married Charles Newby in 1920 but in the 1851 Census Charles is listed as being married to Martha. So, I am assuming Sussanah mist have died between those dates.

Im trying to work out when she died as at the moment I dont know whether Martha or Susannah was the mother of my ancestor.

FYI

Martha was born approx 1813 in Brierley Common, Yorks
Chalres was born approx 1795 in Campbell Doncaster
Im assuming Susannah was born approx 1800

Thanks

Do either of these children look familiar (only Charles Newby of the right age in Yorkshire in the 1841). The address looks like Bell Lane:

Hi

Thanks for looking but her maiden name was Williamson, she married Charles and became a Newby so had she married again she would have changed surname again... so I dont think this can be her.

but thankyou

Hi Potty

I dont think the dates fit in as my Charles was born 1795.

But thank you

Potty

Potty Report 25 Oct 2008 17:42

Ages on the 1841 were rounded down to the nearest 5 so he could have been anything from 40 to 46. Also, the address that Charles and Martha are living at in 1851 is Bells Close which is where the Charles I found was living in 1841 (have rechecked the image and it is Close not Lane as I originally posted)

The 1841 unfortuneatly does not give marital status so can't tell if Charles was a widow or not then.

Have you found his marriage to Martha?

I think Potty does have the right 1841 census for Charles he was living in Pells Close and this is him in the 1851 census again living in Pells Close
Name: Charles Newby
Age: 52
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1799
Relation: Head
Spouse's Name: Martha
Gender: Male
Where born: Doncaster, Yorkshire, England

Civil Parish: Doncaster
Ecclesiastical parish: Christchurch

Martha Newby 38

Unfortunately, as you know, the 1841 census doesn't state marital status but the chances are that Susannah died somewhere between 1832 and 1837 possibly in childbirth to son Charles. So it might be necessary to look at Parish records for date.

It looks like Charles married again between 1841-1851 as there is quite an age gap between Charles and James

Hi Guys

Wow thanks for all your replies. Have to try and digest all that now ....

My ancester is James Newby born c1845 who later married Emma Butler.

The information that I had from another GR member was that the mother was Susannah but from the 41 census it lists Martha as being Charles' mother..

I'll have to re-look at all the info you have given me along with the census images.

Thanks so much for all your help.

Michelle

Michelle Report 25 Oct 2008 19:16

Hi Again

So I have just digested everything your said and apart from the red herring that states that Charles' mother was Martha (?) it would appear that:

Charles Married Susannah in 1820
Anne was born c 1830
Charles born c1833
Susannah dies 1832-1837 (possibly 1840 if Catherines record is correct)
CHarles marries Martha approx 1842
James is born c1845 which means that Martha is his mother and the informtion that all my relatives have (which iriginated from a GR member) is incorrect.

Do please let me know if ive got any of this wrong.

Thanks guys.

Michelle

Yes, you have got it right, Megan.

Charles is actually the son to the head of household (Charles). If their is a husband and wife, the transcribers assume that the wife is the mother of all the children - not always correct.

Have you got James birth cert? This would confirm his mother's name.
