I am looking for anyone who may have information on Henry Carr, born about 1811 in Sunderland. He later married Johanna Peters and lived in Liverpool. This concerns the search for my grandfather Charles Peters who was married in 1896 and lived in Sunderland with wife Alice and 3 children in the 1901 census. I am currently researching a Peters family from Liverpool. There is a Joseph Peters living with his parents and family in early 1840-50s. In the 1861 census he is to be found living with his sister Johanna and her husband Henry Carr, a port worker. Joseph later married Ruth and in the next census they have a son Charles (and I think 2 or 3 other children). By the age of 13 this Charles is living with his uncle Henry Carr in Liverpool. Henry's wife Johanna has died and his family are grown and left home (Henry is 70). There is no sign of Charles' original family, father Joseph, mother Ruth or siblings. By the 1891 census Henry Carr is about 80, has another young lad living with him, and no sign of Charles. Does anyone know if this Charles worked on the wharves and then went up to Sunderland to work as a waterfront labourer or sailor? After his marriage in Sunderland my grandfather's first son was called Joseph (after his father perhaps?). Any information on this Charles Peters or Henry Carr greatly appreciated. |

Was Charles Peters actually born in Birmingham or was he born in Liverpool ? |

We are not sure - the only clue is that Birmingham was his birthplace listed on the 1901 census when he was 33. But I have almost exhausted research on every Charles Peters in Birmingham and surrounds (and there were quite a few of them - almost all working in their adult life at Aston in some part of the iron industry) and not yet come up with any positive clues, So am beginning to look elsewhere. |

Hi Barbara, Thanks for that information. This is certainly an interesting and involved family. Ruth must have died (or divorced) between 1871 and 1881. So far nothing has negated that particular Charles from the POSSIBILITY of being my grandfather. The only part missing is proof that he left the home of Henry Carr (I would think some time between 1884 aged 16 to about 1888-90 aged 20-22) and went up to Sunderland as, or to become, a sailor. |

From this entry it looks as if this is another false lead as our Charles definitely married Alice in Sunderland. Oh well - back to the drawing board! Thanks so much for the assistance. - Liz |
