Ipswich record office (try googling for exactly what they hold) probably hold church records for the area so you could look for marriage & baptisms. It can be a long trawl but often worth it in the end.

If they have the probate index and you can find a will you may be lucky enough to be able to actually read a copy if it was proved in the area. I know that is the case in Lancashire. I'm sure the staff would help you there.

You would not be able to see copies of certificates (I wish!!) as they are not available in CRO's. The volume and page numbers refer to the GRO volumes which are held at Southport. Some counties have a special certificate office but the sytem is the same as at the GRO.

thats great info thanks :) i suppose if i head down to the Ipswich records office i may find some info.

What else do they hold at the record office? i seen on the registers they have volume and page numbers on them? if i went down to the records office and looked at that volume and page would i get a lot more info then is on here?

to look for a will you need to look at the national probate index for the year he died and possibly the following few years as well. If you find a probate record that fits (they give date of death address and who the executors are plus sometimes wife's name) you can then send off to York Registry for a full copy at a cost of £5. Indices are usually held in County record offices and at some major libraries.
Wills can be a great source of info - or conversely tell you nothing that you did not know already. One I have names everyone living in the hamlet!

Sorry not replied sooner , been off the computer for a while.

You need the year, volume and page number to order a certificate. These are the numbers coming after the district as in the above vol 4a page 901.

Does your nan know of any other siblings or his parents names?

alviegal Report 21 Oct 2008 20:51

His mother was born in Lambeth, perhaps they didn't go back to Suffolk and he ended up growing up and marrying in Lambeth? I think you would need to purchase the marriage certificate.

alviegal Report 21 Oct 2008 14:00

I see from the marriage to Elizabeth Milligan, his middle initial was N. This may be useful in narrowing things down. I don't know if this is him in 1901?
