Thanks Barbara! odd that she gave him her previous married name as a middle name? I have tried the 1881 census and someone over there has tried to find her but no luck. I suppose its a deadend if I can't find her birth cert? maybe she was born in USA? Or just not registered.. |

If it's the only one you can find for the period and all other info fits then I would. OK it might be wrong, but the odds are it's the correct one. |

It's quite common for them not to show their middle names in census returns so don't worry about a missing middle name .. |

Is it possible she was born out of the country? she is only ever listed as Sarah on the census, never as Sarah Elizabeth. |

I can't find where she married her American husband (richard ragland) although they lived in New York/brooklyn area so could assume it was there? |

Oh! I didn't know that. Is there a way of establishing that she was born there? Not very good at thinking outside of the box! |

The birth may not have been registered..........it wasn't compulsory until 1875. |
