Thanks Barbara! odd that she gave him her previous married name as a middle name? I have tried the 1881 census and someone over there has tried to find her but no luck. I suppose its a deadend if I can't find her birth cert? maybe she was born in USA? Or just not registered..

Anyway, thanks for looking you have been a great help!

If it's the only one you can find for the period and all other info fits then I would. OK it might be wrong, but the odds are it's the correct one.

Good luck. I shall keep my fingers crossed.

Ok Jill, thanks for that, I suppose I could order the cert without being sure if its her or not?

It's quite common for them not to show their middle names in census returns so don't worry about a missing middle name ..

yes got her maiden name from the cert on her second marriage, also her fathers details

Ericthered Report 20 Oct 2008 23:16

Did you get her maiden name from the cert for her second marriage?

And her father's details?

Who were the witnesses?

Annette

Annette Report 20 Oct 2008 23:13

Is it possible she was born out of the country? she is only ever listed as Sarah on the census, never as Sarah Elizabeth.

thanks for your replies

I can't find where she married her American husband (richard ragland) although they lived in New York/brooklyn area so could assume it was there?

Ericthered

Ericthered Report 20 Oct 2008 23:07

Where did she marry her American husband?

Annette

Annette Report 20 Oct 2008 23:06

Oh! I didn't know that. Is there a way of establishing that she was born there? Not very good at thinking outside of the box!

thanks for your reply

The birth may not have been registered..........it wasn't compulsory until 1875.

You need also to establish that she was born where she said she was................I can't see any sign of her before her marriage............
