Yes Rebecca, you would be right, (Rutland Belle is the name of the boat that does trips around Rutland Water).

Rebecca, it's funny isn't it, I spent my working life in the good old NHS, nurse, midwife and Health visitor so I don't mind helping a fellow colleague.
I looked on Ancestry tel directories and Hampson's Garden Centres are listed from about 1939

I am retired now (thank goodness) so this hobby keeps my mind active.

Hi Jennifer, thanks for that info, i dont mind at all. The funny thing is, is that although im Rebecca Hampson by marriage, the tree i am looking for is for my nurse at the local doctors , she is Hampson also and as we both live in Devon there are not many Hampsons about! I have just been having a look around for her and yes losing 2 wives is not very lucky! They both died in their thirties...sad.

I remember Cambridge Road Baths! I went there with my sister as a child!

Rebecca, MOH thinks that Drysalter is more to do with food preserving. He started off training to be a mill manager and has never come across the word used there, also he grew up surrounded by mills and mill workers and can't recall the occupation, (he left the mill industry when he saw the writing on the wall).

If you google 'drysalter' the only definition it come up with is the one to do with food and also a chemist shop combined.I even found a picture of a shop.

Also Hampson was a drysalter in 1871 before he married Elizabeth.
He wasn't very lucky with his wives was he, losing 2 of them.

Hope you don't mind me nosying about in your tree, they make a change from all my boring Ag Labs!!

Jennifer, that would indeed make sense as his second wife Elizabeths father was a Woolen cloth merchant. So maybe he worked for him?

Rebecca, had to go out. I asked MOH who is Huddersfield born and bred and his first answer was something to do with preserving food.

On Victorian Occupations it says:
Dry Salter A dealer in pickles, dried meats, salted meats, and sauces. or A dealer in dyes and colours used in the dying trade. Also a person who made or dealt in salt.

So it could be one of those things. Being as Huddersfield was at the heart of the wool industry, I wonder if it was to do with dying for the cloth industry?

Thank you Jennifer. William Hampson that lived there was a drysalter, was that something to do with preserving food whoudl you know? I wil take a look at these garden centres , thanks again.

Rebecca, I also have moved away from Huddersfield. At the time that the Hampsons lived there, Cambridge Road was upper middle class, but when I lived there the substantial stone built houses had all been turned into flats and it was very down-market. I was a student midwife at the time.

I believe now it has been rejuvenated again, the Cambridge road Public Baths pulled down and house built. The original houses remain.

There was and maybe still are, 2 large 'Hampson's Graden Centres' in Huddersfield.
