Steven Report 6 Oct 2008 22:07

Hello

This afternoon I posted a request ( Look up please John Bishop)
I got a prompt reply giving me his Father Thomas Bishop.

I realise now that I should not have started another thread for Thomas Bishop. Too late, in my ignorance as a newby I did it.

I now realise that it can cause problems with duplicated research but at the time ,I thought the original for John was finished.

I will be sure not to make that mistake again.

The problem is, there are two lines of research on the latest thread. One which has the line (Thomas)coming from Priddy in Sommerset and another coming from Devon.

Now I know these people have tried to help and for that I am truly greatful, but I am so cofused by what they have found ( and they all seem to be confident experts) I now dont know who is right

Perhaps someone out there could have a look at these threads for me and offer an opinion.

The last thing I want to do is go down the wrong road but if you read the threads you will see how easy for a novice that would be.

I do realise this is a sensitive issue and the last thing I want to do is offend or seem ungreateful but only one line can be right and it would be such a shame to waste all of thier effort.

Please feel free to PM me if you have an opinion as to which might be right or add to the thread as normal.

Thank you

Steven

Hi Steven
I'm glad you've written how confusing two threads can be - some people think we moan for nothing!!
We none of us are 'experts' - we just try to help using the experience we've gained.
I haven't seen either thread yet -
Bishop is going to be hard - very popular name (don't like to use the word 'common')

I will have a look

I'd go along with these - found by JenW -
Most consistent - to be sure - you'd have to buy some certs -

Hello

Well,

I have John Bishop c1842 married to Ann Hiscox c1845 as the parents of Catherine Bishop c1872 who married James Thomas Roy c1871.

Thier daughter Florence Roy c1901was my Grandmother.

Florence was married to William George Stanley Jones and they came from the Redcliffe area of Bristol.

Please help, as I now have my doubts about the whole line. "

Now your really NOT going to like what I'm going to say but here goes-

You are making a fundamental mistake in not buying copy certs. I can tell by your post that you've not bought Florence's birth cert. I'm afraid that if you are going to research your tree you are going to have to start again by locating & buying a copy. You may even need to start at a late date than this, it depends on what information you have that you can confirm.

As Christine says, Bishop is not the most unusual name & as you have seen, is it very easy to follow the wrong line.

Your not the first to do this, I've done it myself but you need to start at the begining & slowly work your way back.

Thomas

Hello everyone
Thank you all for your help and interest.
There has been so much research done by so many of you.
As you can see by reading the threads some of the info doesnt quite fit, so the only way forward I think is to get the certs one at a time.
At least some of it will prove to be correct Im sure.
The only way to prove it is the certs.
Thank you all once again

Steve
You are making the right decision getting certs. Having certs is the only way to prove the findings on the census. Its also exciting waiting for them to arrive. Marriage certs often have family as witnesses. Sometims married sisters so you get thier married name.
Death certs with the informant who again could be married daughters.

Steven

The ONLY way forward is to buy the certificates.

I myself consider the least helpful certificate is the death certificate ......... the only thing that you can be certain of on a death certificate is the date of death, the cause of death, the doctor's name, and the informant's name!! Everything else on there is only what is known to the informant ........... this means that the name of dead person may well be incorrect or spelt wrongly, age at death may well be wrong, marital status may be wrong or omitted, etc.

Take it slowly, step by step. Buy as many certificates as you can afford, especially birth and marriage

Personally .............. I believe that any help given to you on these boards should NOT be taken as the final ultimate information

.......... YOU yourself need to follow up and check out all the information given to you.

After all, we are only members like yourself, with a little more experience and expertise in searching out information.

We can be wrong ... and often are!!!

Good luck!
