Does anyone have any connection with Elizabeth CARR, born in Rawmarsh in 1851? Elizabeth was illegitimate and was adopted by William and Hannah RIDGE (nee GRANGE) of Ecclesfield by the time of the 1861 census. As a young woman she worked as a file cutter, then married John DAWSON of Ecclesfield in 1872 and went on to have eight children. Elizabeth was my great-grandmother and I would love to find out who her mother was. Please do get in touch if you have any info. Thanks. |

Thanks, Ann, done that, but no further info. Tried Free BMD, Ancestry, Family History Online, Hugh Wallis, etc, etc, etc. Bought marriage cert and father's name isn't given. Just hoping that someone someday who has a connection will see this. Bit of a brick wall at the moment tho. :-( |

Thanks for the reply, Shemp. There do seem to have been huge numbers of Carrs around Rawmarsh. I always assumed that Elizabeth's family would have been quite poor and not in a position to employ anyone (simply because Elizabeth herself was obviously not well off, but that could be to do with the disgrace of illegitimacy), so what you say is really interesting. Was your Rose a servant? I will try phoning Rotherham archives. Thanks for the tip. Not much hope of visiting tho as I live down in Gloucestershire. But I'll ring them anyway. Thanks again. |
