Never thought about that.

Silly question but where can I find the dates for when the census was done? Never seen any dates on the actual census itself

Yes sorry about the phrase, it is pretty awful

Noticed on the 61 census, 9 year old son William. Is he her illegitimate son? If so shouldn't he be 10 by then? That census was taken April 7.

BTW Don't you hate that phrase "Making an honest woman out of her"?
Why couldn't it be her who made an honest man out of him?

Lyp24

Lyp24 Report 5 Oct 2008 16:06

I think he made an honest woman out of her after having 6 children with her!! I do have that marriage cert. But they must have had many bridesmaids etc!!

There's a Robert Knight and Isabella Ormston marrying Dec. Q 1866, Tynemouth. (10b 325). A little late, though. Don't they show as being married on the 1861 census?

Lyp24 Report 5 Oct 2008 15:54

Thankyou K
That looks promising

Isabella had already had her son when she was in the workhouse. Unfortunately was listed on another page of census with other children

K Report 5 Oct 2008 15:50

Looking through the deaths for Ormston's in Gateshead between 1837 and 1841 this is the only one I could see that would tie in as a possible wife for William.

There are two possible marriages in 1821 and 1820 in Newcastle on the IGI for a William Ormston to a Jane Kesley or Oliver

Deaths Mar 1841 (>99%)

Jill, in 1851 Isabella is in the workhouse, probably pregnant (Lynn said she had an illegitimate son in 1851.) and Mary is working as a servant.

Thought I better just add
Isabella Ormston became Mrs Robert Knight (alledgedly!!)

Thanks Jill

Definately her on 1851 in Gateshead Workhouse. Son William 1 month old ties in with everything else I have right down the line.

There seemed to be two or three Isabellas floating round the family. William (Isabellas father ) had many siblings and seems to be a common nasme

Oh - so the 1881 is not him either. Odd how Isabella matches up. Have you found the children in 1851?

1881 - and now I'm getting a bit confused. He shows as uncle - but Isabella is the age of his "daughter" from the 1841 - so is he her father? I know 1841 does not show relationships ...

Isabella Archbold shows as mother in law to HoH (Isabella's husband)

Thanks Jill

I had the same thing originally but I now believe that William died in 1847, which meant his daughters appeared to have to fend for themselves!

Yes Margaret, Isabella who is my ggggrandmother had an illegitimate son in 1851 and was in Gateshead workhouse. When she finally married she moved back to Newcastle. Probably thought the grass was greener, but it certainly doesn't sound it!!

1851 census has Isabella Ormston, age 19, born Newcastle in the workhouse in Gateshead, Durham.

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 5 Oct 2008 15:26

I see, on the 41 census they're living in Pipwellgate, Gateshead, Durham. Isabella is 10 and Mary 5, all not born in county.

Lyp24

Lyp24 Report 5 Oct 2008 15:06

Have been trying to find the marriage and wifes name of William Ormston. He was born about the 1802 mark in Northumberland. In 1841 Census in Pipwellgate, William has two children, Isabella and Mary born between 1832 - 1836 (unable to establish when, but believe they were born in Newcastle, although alas can't find their birth certs either!! to see who their mother was)

Is there anyone who can help with info?

Lynn
