Bradley around 1800 in London

PB_NZ Report 4 Oct 2008 08:07

I was born in New Zealand, and am researching the Bradley's on my father's side. My ggg-grandfather "Arthur Bradley" was born in or around London, England I'm guessing around 1818. He married Lydia Winnen (although could be spelt Wyndham, Wynen or similar) in Marylebone, London in 1832.

In 1849 Arthur, Lydia and their young family came out to New Zealand on the ship "Lady Nugent". The children's names are Henry, Mary Ann, Arthur, Henrietta?, Alfred and Jane.

Henry (my gg-grandfather) was born in Christchurch, Middlesex.

Also on the ship was Algernon Tollemache who was commented to be Arthur's Uncle (although I have nothing concrete to confirm that). Family lore says that a Lord Tollemache (or his son) had an illegitimate child with one of the parlour maid's on the estate and Arthur was that child.

Arthur is buried in Stoke, Nelson, New Zealand and his father is listed as "unknown".

Arthur's mother - Ann Bradley (possibly maiden name?) is also buried in Stoke, Nelson so she must have come out to New Zealand at some stage. Possibly an Irish connection here too?

So have you found them on the 1841? When were the kids born and where? How old was Arthur when he died (why are you having to guess at his likely birth year?) Where did you get Lydias surname? When was she born? What was Arthurs occupation?

Please give us EVERYTHING you know.

I believe its the Spitalfields area of East London.

I dont think anyone can further this until the OP comes back to give us more inf

The birth year given for Arthur would make him 14 on the given marriage year.

On the ship - Tollemarche "commented on as the uncle" - can you give us a link to the record please.

Hi Heather, sorry to take so long in replying, I thought this was set up to email me whenever anyone added to the thread, but I was mistaken!!

The following is the info I have:

my gg-grandfather Henry James Bradley
Birth Certificate (GRO ref 1843, Sept, Marylebone, Vol 1, pg 178).
born 2nd August 1843 at 8 Duke Street. Registration District - Marylebone; Sub District - Christchurch; County - Middlesex.
Father - Arthur Bradley
Mother - Lydia Bradley, formerly (I can't read the writing on the certificate, could be a number of names).

my ggg-grandfather
copy of register of deaths (not official death certificate)
Arthur Bradley, died 7th June 1888 aged 74 years.
Mother - Ann Bradley
Father - (left blank)
Born & Married - London
To - Lydia Winman

my ggg-grandmother
copy of register of deaths (not official death certificate)
Lydia Bradley (formerly Winnen)
died 17 November 1878 at Stoke, Nelson, New Zealand, aged 69.
Fathers name - James Winnen
Mothers name - Sarah Winnen (formerly Larner)
Where born - Winslow, Bucks (Buckinghamshire?)
Where married - Marylebone, London
To whom - Arthur Bradley

Ship Passenger List
Lady Nugent, arrived NZ 6th December 1849
Arther & Lydia Bradley and their children Mary Anne, John (Arthur John?), Henry, Alfred and Jane. I think one of their daughters - Elizabeth - stayed in England.

Also on board Hon. Algernon Grey Tollemache (reported to be Arthur's uncle but cannot clarify that, came from another family history researcher who I had contact with a few years ago - no relation to me).
They all disembarked at Nelson, New Zealand.
Have been told by another source within the family that Arthur's father was the son of Lord Tollemache, and gave him an allowance when he first arrived in New Zealand.

Hi,

I don't know if you are still looking for details on these people. I have Arthur Bradley marrying Lydia Wynmen (Winmen in the Banns) on 15 Sept 1835 in Christchurch, St Marylebone. Witnesses were Richard Maybank and Ann Bradley.

in 1841 Census in Christchurch, Marylebone I have

John Bradley 25 Wood Cutter not born in Middx
Lydia Bradley 25 not born in Middx
Mary 5 born in Middx
John 2 born in Middx

I believe that these males are both Arthur John's.

I have Mary Ann Bradley born to Arthur and Lydia on 11 July 1836 and christened on 23 May 1838 at Christchurch, Marylebone.
Arthur John Bradley born to Arthur John and Lydia on 19 April 1839 and christened on 18 Aug 1839 at Christchurch, Marylebone.
Henry James Bradley born 2 Aug 1843 to Arthur John and Lydia and christened on 15 Oct 1843 at Christchurch, Marylebone
Lydia Jane Bradley born to Arthur John and Lydia on 10 March 1848 and christened on 2 April 1848 at Christchurch, Marylebone.

I have searched high and low and truly believe these are the people you are looking for. I think it would be too much of a coincedence for it to be anyone else. Especially as I can't find anybody else even close.

You may have found all this info since these earlier posts were made, I just happened to come across this today and thought I'd have a look as I love a challenge.

I hope this helps, if you haven't found it up til now.
