Thanks for this information about John being a widower and living with his mother. I had spotted this a couple of weeks back but had not connected it because of the age differences of the children and John himself. However, being new to family research I now understand you have to take some information with a pinch of salt.

The only conflict is this information shows Francis as 10yrs old and with her father, whereas I found Frances at the correct age of 12yrs with Edwin with their Grandmother Fanny Hancock in the 1891 census.

I too spotted this information about the Copeland Family and Edwin at the correct age appears to be married to May Copeland.

However, I don't think this is my Edwin as his marriage certificate to Elizabeth Hawke in Barnsley in 1915 shows him as a batchelor. He does not appear to have been married before.

I just found a few minutes ago a death for an Annie Maria Machin in Q2 1881 in Congleton. This must be Edwin's mother. Gosh within a month or two of Edwin's birth and the census date when she is alive. This explains why Edwin and Frances appear to be with their Grandma in the 1891 Census.

There is no mention of the children James or John or their father John in this census though.

I have Edwin and Elizabeth's marriage certificate for their marriage in Barnsley in 1915. Edwin shows his father's name as Thomas. In the 1881 census his father is John Machin and mother annie maria Machin (nee Hancock). I thought his father might be John Thomas but cannot find a birth of a John Thomas Machin.

I thought of the early death of Edwin's father and came up with the death of a Thomas Machin in Q1. 1876 at the age of 22yrs. Would have been born in 1854/1853? Only problem - their oldest child John was born in 1876 and the others after this date. This death cannot be connected.

Last, hopeful, nudge before giving up!

Have you looked for deaths for the parents?

Does anyone have any information on Edwin Machin born 2.2.1881 Newbold, Asbury, Cheshire - registration district Congleton, Cheshire, UK.

I can find him in the 1881 census - 2mths old with a sister Frances and brothers John and James. The parents were John Machin and Ann Machin (nee Hancock). Unfortunately, I can only see Edwin and Frances in the 1891 census with their grandmother Fanny Hancock. I cannot trace the parents or siblings in this census. By 1901 I cannot pick up any of them.

Edwin Machin married Elizabeth Hawke in Barnsley, 1915. They moved to Newcastle on Tyne sometime after this where they became my father's foster parents. I do not think they had any children of their own. Edwin died in 1943 and his wife Elizabeth in 1948.

I would be pleased to hear from anyone with information on this family. Thankyou.
