I am really grateful for your tips and help.
I really think that this Jane e stanley is the right one too, my grandmother had a brother stanley. Stanley is also her middle name and her brother Randolph's middle name. Sadly GM died before I was born so am going in blind . My Mother knows very little about her or her own mothers origins.
Whitley makes complete sense rather than whitby !

I looked at the census records and Jane E Stanley has a brother - Ralph Britton Stanley born 1868 in Morpeth

I'm sure that you're confident about the results of the 1901 census and that it's your family.

If you look at the birth place of Britton, it says Whitby, Yorks.........I think that his might be an error ......
In 1891 Britton's birth place is Whitley, Northumberland

In 1901 and 1891 Jane is born in Bellingham and Bedlington which are pretty much the same area.

If you look at the marriage that Catherine found then it might be worth looking for Jane Stanley who was born in the Bedlington area about 1866

The above are census returns which shows who was living in a house on the night of the census.... as you can see it give their names, their relationship to the head of the household, their marital status, their age, occupation, and where they were born..

Names can often be spelt differently. In those days the names were written down as they sounded and because those giving the information most probably couldn't read or write they couldn't correct anything that was wrong.

However, this is the birth registration for Britton

What you need to do is work back from what you know is correct.

will look at those , have discounted darlington link different charles .
Thought husband Charles as 1891 census showed a Jane and Charles living at 45 victoria street rotheram,Janes birth town seemed to match.the Jane on 1901 with Harold Neruda and Brittian etc

Have since found on 1871 census a jane Oxley living at Bedlington Colliery , with her grandparents but
their name is Wilkinson , Alos if she married an Oxley unlikely she is an oxley at 4! Its just the towns/birth places match

Getting very confused now need to go back to 1901 and take it slow i guess??

Long story but trying to find out about great grandparents Jane E And Charles Oxley , who were listed on the 1891 census in Yorks. By 1901 cant trace Charles but Jane is living with Children inc Brittain, Harold ,Neruda, Mona, Randolph,
I know she went on to have three more children inc my grandmother Mabel Oxley in 1903 who died in 1969,

Would love to know more about Jane, Charles and Mabels early life .
