Hi there i have just started tracing my family tree. I am trying to trace my mums side of the family and now got a little stuck.

Unfortunately i cannot ask her as she died a few years ago. I have managed to trace back to my great grandmother Gertrude E Johnson.
Marriage name Beavers. She died in 1967 so I found a reference for that. She has always lived in the Yorkshire area. So from those records I have worked out that she was born in around 1885.

Looking on the 1901 census I have found a Gertude Johnson age 16 who is a School Teacher and was born in Yorkshire Bryam. I am thinking these are the right records but not sure how I go about verifying if these are the right facts and the same person.

I know she had her first child Catherine Mathilda Beavers on 31st October 1904 (my mums mum) and her last child Mavis E Beavers in 1931 and a few more children in between.

Also I dont know when and who she married, so if someone can help and point me in the right direction it be most appreciated.

I was up until 2am this morning as I am getting hooked!!

Thanks. Mark Webster

If you buy the birth certificate for one of the children, that will tell you the fathers name and therefore the name of Gertrudes husband.

Alternitavely, the marriage certificate of your grandmother (Catherine) will also name her father.

Thanks for your help so far guys, not got Gertrudes MC as i dont know the date they got married. Want to get her Birth certificate but want to make sure I got the right person!

I would purchase Catherine's birth certificate first. It will name both parents.

Mavis E Beavers SQ 1931 Johnson Gt. Ouseburn
Volume 9a Page 121.

Perhaps Archibald married twice. If Gertrude was born 1886 as you suggest...she would have been 45 years old when Mavis was born.....not an impossibility but unlikely.

Thanks for that info Ericthered. Can yo utell me how you got that info so quickly!!! Also what makes you think she may have been married more than once?

Mark

Mark Report 24 Sep 2008 16:54

Mavis was the youngest daughter, she was younger than my uncle who was 2 years older than her. I know she had about 5 or 6 children.

Am I using genesunited the wrong way as cant see how you come across this info so quickly especially for the marriage records. When I look it only gives you the name of one person but not who they married.

Mark

Mark Report 24 Sep 2008 17:00

Not sure what the other names of the children were but Arthur does ring a bell

Mark, i started my quest about 12 months ago so i'm still a "newby" at this. A piece of advice i can offer you is to validate you research via birth & marrige certificates starting with your parents & working back.If i had done this i would not have spent countless hours chasing false leads & going along wrong lines! I know it can be costly(£7 per cert) but it will be worth it in the end. I have found that everyone connected to this site are very helpful. Check out all the boards/community/help centre etc Good Luck & Good Hunting . ( yes it is addictive )

Thanks for all your replies guys, I think you have proved I was going down the wrong track!! Will order the certificates. Last bit of advice I need is what site are you using to find the info about the marriages as you dont get all that much info on this site.
