Hello Margaret

Does the Marriage Index have any Matthew BLANDs marrying between about 1820 and 1839 ?

They were travellers so could be anywhere
I do realize they may not have married but give Oxfordshire as their birth place so worth a try :-)

Thanks

You will find a tree on Ancestry with the above people on it, where Mary wife of Richard Porter married in 1842 Cheltenham she was Mary Ann Hillman.

Mary Ann Porter was buried 18/3/1878 aged 55 yrs in Chipping Norton.

There is a Memorial Inscription which reads

Also of Ann wife of Richard Porter who died 9/3/1839 aged 44 yrs

I think this gives you.

Please write this out, and it will make more sense, I cannot find the marriage in Cheltenham for Richard Porter and Mary Ann Hillman on Latter Day Saints, perhaps you will have more. Luck..... Margaret

Hi Margaret

That is alot of work you put in for me and I really appreciate it. I will take some time to absorb what you say and also send away for the marriage cert. If you don't mind I may have more questions on other lines of family as a lot originate in the Oxford area. I'll research some more and perhaps come back to you for more help if I get stuck!

Many, Many Thanks

MARTYN
I looked at the marriage entry for Thomas Talboys and there is only one Ann to choose from. 1839 3rd quarter vol 16 page 141, but on various sites, it seems that people have chosen an Ann Slater, there is not an Ann Slater to choose from on 3 q vol 16, page 141 1839 only a Sarah Slater.
The only way this could tie up is if Ann Lyne is a widow, and previously Ann Slater.
My advice is buy the certificate, there is a PAF file on line which says it has bought the certificate, and shows Ann Slater as the wife of Thomas Talboys.
Still I would fork out for the certificate to make sure myself. Sadly the parish registers for 1839 seem to be in a mess so I cannot help you for the South Hinksey marriage entry for 1839.
Here is what I have found out

Thomas Talboys was born c 1799 in Unknown place, but says it was in Oxfordshire himself on census.
he married 5/1/1820 in St Aldate Oxford City to Sarah Melville.

The Melvilles seem to be a Boatman family, which ties up with Thomas Talboys being a boatman at the time.

Thomas Talboys wife Sarah nee Melville was buried 18/4/1839 aged 53 yrs and buried in St Aldate Oxford City.
They had baptised in St Aldate
Thomas Melville Talboys 25/7/1822
David Talboys 10/4/1825

David Talboys 1825 married a Caroline and they had Isabella Ann baptised 24/6/1848 St Aldates,Caroline Elizabeth baptised 2/6/1850. probably more, but I stopped here.

Thomas Talboys married for a second time in 1839 to either Ann Lynne, or Ann Slater, Buy the certificate....

Thomas Talboys and Ann had the following children baptised in St Aldate
Thomas Alphonso 2/8/1840

Richard 10/1/1844 no mention of Adolphus until he marries Sarah Louise Taylor 3/8/1863 South Hinksey, and when his relict Sarah Louise Talboys proves his will 19/12/1918 she is living 127 Bullingdon Road Oxford he left £2308.18s.6d. Richard Adolphus Talboys died 26/9/1918 127 Bullingdon Road Oxford.

Ann Ophelia 10/1/1844 St Aldate. same day as Richard. above.
Ann Ophelia had an illegitimate daughter.. Rose Talboys baptised 17/10/1869 in Soyuth Hinksey. her father was Richard Price a Post Office Clerk.

From the census
Lydia c 1846, Alice c 1848, Henry c 1851, Rachel c 1853, William c 1855, Benjamin c 1858

Sarah Louis Talboys, died 17/4/1931 her will was proved 6/7/1931 by Richard Adolphus Talboys, her son?? she was living at 127 Bullingdon Road, Oxford in the sum of £175.1s.6d.

Richard Adolphus Talboys son as above, lived at 2 Folly Bridge oxford and died 27/10/1932, probate granted to Florence Talboys and Reginald Adolphus Talboys a waterman, £2005.18.1d. resworn at £2052.11s.5d.

Thomas Talboys 1799 his will was proved in the sum of £260. 11s.6d. by his relict Ann Talboys.

Some mention is made of the parentage of Thomas Talboys being from Dursley in Glos.
There is a baptism in Dursley which could be him on the Family Search site.
Also there is a Rachel Talboys having an illegitimate son thomas in Dursley, and your Thomas does have a daughter Rachel, also there is a Benjamin Talboys regularly imprisoned in Gloucester for larceny, and your Thomas has a Benjamin, but right at the end, so probably not too proud of the other Benjamin. You can search the Dursley parish registers at FAmily Search new site.
Sorry not been much help, but you really do need the marriage certificate.

Thomas Gardiner (parish register) married Ann Prester 22/8/1784 in Headington witnesses Richard King, John Samson by Banns
I wonder as there are only two Presters on the marriage disc for Oxfordshire if perhaps Ann Prester is really Ann Plester or sometimes known as Plaister.
One of the two Presters on the marriage disc Samuel, when I looked up the marriage on the parish register turned out to be Plester. But sadly he did not have children in the parish where he had married.
Thomas Gardiner and Ann had the following children baptised in Headington I will give the surnames they were baptised with

Elizabeth Gardiner 8/10/1786 mother Preston.
Sarah Gardiner 14/10/1787,,,, no burial for her but there is the following
Sarah Gardiner 14/10/1789 mother Prester as is the one above
George Gardener 3/9/1790 Prester and Gardener
John Gardner 10/11/1793 Prester and Gardner
Mary Anne 4/12/1796 born 30/11/1796 Gardiner
Thomas 26/1/1800 Gardner born 23/1/1800

There was an infant Ann buried 31/10/1786 Headington
also an infant John Buried 4/8/1785 Headington..

Mary Anne 4/12/1796 married George Cox Headington he was a widower 9/8/1841

Thomas Gardner 23/1/1800 Headington married Jane Rockell 12/5/1823 she was buried in Headington aged 84 yrs from the Oxford Union.17/12/1885
Thomas 1800 was buried 2/3/1859 aged 62 yrs in Headington
they had the following children baptised in Headington
Helen Elizabeth 10/7/1823
William 8/5/1825 married Elizabeth Ballinger Witney 1850

Charles 26/12/1826 married Headington Eliza Jones 2/3/1851 daughter of Robert Jones, witnesses John Jones, Rebecca Jones. they had a daughter Anne baptised 25/12/1852 Headington of Barton

Jonathan 9/11/1828
Sarah 22/5/1831
Alice 13/7/1833
Alice 21/8/1836
Robert 8/4/1838
Lucy 19/7/1840
FAnny 4/6/1843
Mary Jane 10/5/1846
missed off Thomas baptised 1/3/1834

GEORGE GARDNER 3/9/1790 Headington was buried 16/12/1869 aged 81 yrs Headington he married Fanny Owens 31/10/1814 Oxford St Clements
Fanny was buried 24/8/1870 aged 77 yrs from Oxford, probably meaning the Oxford Union Workhouse.
George and Fanny baptised the following children in Headington
Charlotte 1/11/1816
Ann 19/9/1819 who married Thomas Price 20/6/1842 Headington son of Thomas price

Mary 28/3/1821 who had a daughter Elizabeth baptised 8/4/1849 a single woman from Sandhill. I think this is correct.

William 8/1/1827 who married Hannah Cooper full age daughter of George Cooper witnesses John Phillips, Susanna Jacob 4/9/1848 Headington

Fanny 13/5/1833

there is a John Gardner baptised 25/1/1848 son of George and Ann, but he may be misleading.

Thats as far as I have gotten with Thomas Gardner married to Ann Prester.

I can find nothing on William Gardner born c 1789 Headington, not on the parish register baptisms in Headington.

Hi Margaret

I am currently looking for any information on a Thomas Talboys born 1799 in oxford(?), Oxfordshire. By 1851 census he was in Thames Street, North Hinksey, Abingdon District. His wife Ann was born 1819 and I was wondering if she was his second wife as having looked on a certain other website I think I found them on the 1841 census at Grandpont Berks, St Aldate, Berkshire, England. Thomas aged 42, Anne aged 22 and there is a David aged 16.

Perhaps David was from a previous marriage??

Also are you able to find who the Ann was?? It has been suggested she might be Ann Slater, but if this is the marriage details for Thomas (Sep 1839):

Talboys Thomas Oxford 16 141

BMD does list a:

LYNE Ann Oxford 16 141

If I look up Ann Slater in the same qtr I do find:

Slater Anne Oxford 16 1_1

so that could fit. One more supporting point is that in the 1851 census they have a son Thomas (b1841). BMD lists a birth in Oxford Jun1840 for Thomas Alphonso Talboys. in the 1841 census there is a Thomas Talboys listed with a John and Susannah Slater both born 1791 Oxford.

So any information on Thomas Talboys b1799, parents or siblings would be very useful. Any help on his marriage/marriages would also be appreciated and if Ann Slater is correct and John and Susannah are her parents any information going further back on them would be of great help.

Sorry if I am asking a lot in one go and no hurry.

Thanks for your offer to help!

Martyn

Hi Margaret,
You helped me enormously in the past with information about Oxfordshire people. I would be most interested in you would help fill in or flesh out anything on these people:

Thomas GARDNER married Ann PRESTER 22aug1784 at Headington, Oxon.

William GARDNER was born 1789 at Headington; possibly in 1841 he was at Barton, Headington, with sister or wife Mary (census).
Thomas GARDNER was born 23jan1800 and chr 26jan1800 at Headington (IGI). Thomas married Jane ROCKELL 12may1823 at Headington. Jane Gardner (1808) d. 3rd qtr 1883 or Jane Gardener (1801) d. 4th qtr 1884 at Headington (bmd).

Thomas GARDNER was chr 1may1834 at Headington. Thomas (ag. lab.) married (1) Emma CRAWFORD 10feb1861 at Headington; Emma was chr 15apr1838 at Headington, dau of James Crawford and Hannah (IGI). James Crawford marr Hannah Jacobs 25dec1832 at Headington (IGI). Emma Gardner d. probably 1887 at Elsfield. Thomas GARDNER marr (2) Eliza BIRCH (1856 Grafton, Shropshire) 2nd qtr 1895 at Thame.

Robert GARDNER was chr 8apr1838 at Barton. Robert Gardner was b. 2nd qtr 1838, Headington (bmd). Robert (ag. lab. and carter) married Harriet PURDY (b. 1837 Stanton St. John, Forest Hill, Oxon). They probably marr 1862 at Headington, though not found on bmd.
