thanks RB, I am gathering info and hopefully will do a blitz on ancestry and get the best out of the 14 day trial sometime in the future.

Ann- I'm not sure exactly what the origins one will offer me, but at £6, plus a further £10, I am reluctant to try that, if ancestry has potentially more info

Are the ones on Origins for the Militia? Is the info you got on a form headed Territorial Force, Attestation? The records on Ancestry should have more than just the attestation.

RutlandBelle Report 21 Sep 2008 16:25

Paul, I'll have a look and get back to you. By the way, Ancestry do a 14 day free trial.

Yes Paul you do get the Military Records. WW1 are not complete as some destroyed in London bombing in WW2, they are known as the 'Burnt Documents'

Sorry to come in late with the ancestry stuff. B****y Genes wouldn't let me post. It happens when the've got some of their dodgy banner adverts running.

Janet 693215

Janet 693215 Report 21 Sep 2008 15:21

However, you should check first to see if he appears on ancestry first as the WW1 records have some attestations

Artbeat

Artbeat Report 21 Sep 2008 15:20

There are 2 on ancestry.

john chiddicks born barking c1887 (fireman).

William chiddicks born c1895 (sawyer).

Janet 693215 Report 21 Sep 2008 15:16

I paid the money (£6 I think it was) and then found that the attestation was a further £10 and it is posted to you. However, it gives me my grandfathers address when he joined up, a description of him, all his family members and addresses, his army record, his previous employer and address of employer. To me it is worth a fortune as I now know that he knew about his elder brother, I know he worked for his cousin he was skinny as a rake and got kicked out of the army for felony. (we're guessing he probably nicked supplies from the quartermasters stores, he was like that!)

Paul Report 21 Sep 2008 15:03

I have just done a search on origins network under the surname that I am researching, Chiddicks, and there appears to be one entry under this category on this site. I don't want to subscribe unnecessarily to the site for one piece of info, has anybody any experience of these types of records and are they likely to yield any useful information

Thanks

Paul
