Yes I have tried the searches mentioned
Grandfather attended my mothers wedding 1937 thats the last record I have.
Mother born 1917 thats the last ref to Grandmother.
Marriage ref is right.
As I have search I do know there are many Charles and Florence Smiths, I know its not easy.
Im glad all my ancestors are not Smiths

Did grandfather sign as a witness at your mother's wedding, ....or is he just mentioned by name on the certificate.?
Perhaps you have photos of him later than that, ...with a grandchild perhaps?

If your mother was living at his address when she married, you could search electoral lists for the following years ( not compiled during war years) and see when he 'disappears' from that address.
That might cut down the search years, especially if other family remained at the address.
He could just have moved away though.........

Lists are searched by address, not name, and are generally found at a main library or archive local to that address.

Gwyn Thanks you've given me plenty of things to try I am fairly new at this I have discovered many ancestors but I must admit I wish this line weren't named Smith.
Yes he did sign as a witness at my mothers wedding.
I have no photo as I have not been very close to my family since the mid 50s for various reasons.
Thanks for your time
